4. I think the cat symbolizes June's mother, or maybe the relationship between June and her mother. June was very relieved to have seen the cat on the window, after thinking her mother killed it. And even though the cat hisses at her like it did to her mother, this cat represents her mother, and her being annoying, trying to look out for June.
1.Amy Tan in her ted talk recited a mantra that says you mustn't get caught up in other people's problems or else you will become stuck. June has gotten involved with Waverly's games every chance there is, getting involved with her games has been holding her back. June has been satisfied with her job, however her job meets expectations but fails to exceed them because everyone expects her to be nothing more then nothing. Her whole life has been filed with disappointment that people's expectations of her have disappeared. This dinner conversation makes June realize the mistake she has made by engaging in Waverly’s problems and sees she must now be selfish towards other people's problems, that will help her move on.
4. The cat symbolises the resilience that June's mother has always had. When the cat was introduced it was basically a street cat, living a hard life and needing to be tough in order to survive and I think that resonated with Suyuan who had to deal with very difficult things in her life as well. The Cat returning in the end symbolises that her mother may not be there physically but she is definitely within her. The gift that she gave June was also a way of her showing they would always be together, mother to daughter. The cat hissing back at June was a way to show that June and her mother are the same on the inside.
The cat symbolizes how June is the only one that truly knows her mother. She knows that her mother wouldn't kill the cat despite what the other people thought. This is another example of how June and Suyuan are interchangeable. "My mother didn't kill that damn cat after all, and I'm relieved. And then I see this cat rubbing more vigorously on the window and he starts to raise his tail. 'Get away from there!' I shout, and slap my hand on the window three times. But the cat just narrows his eyes, flattens his one ear and hisses back at me." I think that secretly June knew that her mother didn't kill the cat and seeing the cat come back was amusing, a reminder of her mother. And more importantly, how well June knows her. The tenant believed that the cat was killed, and even June almost believed it but she secretly knows, and I have a feeling, that this cat has a place in Suyuan's heart; he was a frequent reminder, a familiar friend. There was no way that this cat was gonna be killed. And June also upon seeing the cat, does the same reaction when she sees the cat. This is Amy Tan telling us that even the involuntary motions that they have are the same. Suyuan's character is revealed through June. They are one and the same. And I think the cat itself also recognizes Suyuan in June, that's why it reacts to her at the same time. No matter what shape or form, Suyuan is in June like all mothers are in their daughters.
The daughters inherit their mothers’ competitive natures. Waverly can’t just compliment June, she has to insult her as well, to feel more powerful. there completion also stems from when they were younger. They both were prodigies and they loved to one up one another since then
Waverly and June argue due to the competition that Lindo and Suyuan had set up between them. Lindo and Suyuan both are chasing the American dream through their daughters and pushing them to be their best. Waverly and June are also very opposite especially in their lifestyles that make them class so much. Waverly is more Americanized and feels as if she is better than June due to her corporate job. While June is more down to earth and humble settling for a small job doing copywriting
Waverly and June has always been competitive because their mothers have always been making them buttheads. They were friends since they were younger but they slowly became rivals when they realized their mothers were constantly comparing them. While these two were trying to exceed the expectations set for them, this slowly ruined a closer bond they could've shared.
Waverly and June argue here and then, but it is their competition that led them to this. I would say their relationship is distant because they were always being compared to one another the see who was the best. They just want to prove to their mother, that they have what it takes to make their mother's proud. Not only would they be competitive but their mothers as well. Both wanted to make sure their daughters were able to reach the dreams they never got to experience as a child. Pushing their daughter to do their best the most important them.
The argument is slowly turned to what Waverly wants to talk which is June's financial situation. As she continually comments on how June wouldn't be able to afford her stylist. June doesn't want to continue the conversation so when Waverly starts talking about how she is too cheap to pay for her legal advice. The conversation eventually takes a turn for the worse when she says that her payment for her invoice was late leading her to cry.
Waverly starts off by telling June that she has a nice haircut, but when June tells her that she went to David, Waverly begins to tell her about how she should be afraid since David may have AIDS. This conversation leads to Waverly suggesting the person who cuts her hair, but ends up with a subtle remark about June's financial situation. That subtle remark leads to Waverly talking about how June is "too cheap to pay for her legal advice" (Tan 204). Afterwards, these remarks lead to June commenting about Waverly's firm paying her invoice late, which leads to the heated argument.
The argument starts when Waverly states that June’s Hair stylist might have AIDS and that June goes to him because it’s all she can afford. Then they argued about what to do with June's advertising copy. she made one for Waverly's firm, and at the party Waverly said it wasn't good enough for their firm.
The argument is started by Waverly implying that June's hair professional has AIDS due to him being a homosexual. The AIDS epidemic occurred during the 1980's so it's the time period the book takes place. Waverly makes another nasty remark that it's perhaps all June could afford. (We must remember that Waverly is the successful one and June is the one who dropped out of to college) The conversation gets bitter and June tries to defend her self but Waverly quick remarks make her lose the battle.
Waverly subtly insults June during the dinner, about her choice of hairdresser saying he has ads due to his gender. June retaliates by teasing Waverly about her firm's finances because the bill that June submitted for her ad copy has not been paid. Waverly retorts that June hasn't been paid because her work was not acceptable.
Suyuan gave June the jade pendent after the crab dinner b/c for Suyuan, if something is too good, she wants to save it, that she forget that she saved it. Meaning that Suyuan wanted to give the jade pendant to June for a long time. The significance of the Jade pendent is the bond b/w mother and daughter, Suyuan wanted June to have a piece of her when she passes away. In hopes for that when June is accomplishing her dreams, that Suyuan will next to her and watching over her.
The jade pendant is a relevant symbol in the novel that illustrates the connection that mothers and daughter share. This was Suyuan's way of showing Jing Mei love, it is a pure form of connection, valuable and significant to each other's understanding. Jing-Mei later realizes part of her mother, This is also a theme of the resemblance between mothers and daughters.
Suyuan gives June the jaded pendant because it's an act of solidarity, to show to June that they are one and the same. The pendant's significance is how it symbolizes how the connection between mother and daughter is beyond tangibility and how the meaning of your life starts with where you come from. The moment after dinner shows that June's bond with Suyuan is stronger and has more meaning beyond the surface. "'For a long time, I wanted to give you this necklace. See, I wore this on my skin, so when you put it on your skin, then you know my meaning.. This is your life's importance.'" (Tan 233) June recieves this pendant after battling Waverly, and Suyuan who was watching, notices June's character, the kind of person she truly is on the inside. She finally realizes and wants to tell June how her character is important in its own way, her own place in the world has its own unique significance. Suyuan sees that June is selfless and has a truer moral code. June is the person that is closest to Suyuan's roots and culture. By giving this pendant, Suyuan tells June that being selfless and humble is good and is beneficial on its own. This pendant bonds them together into one, they are the same as one another down to the core.
The jade necklace is suppose symbolize the relationship between the mother and daughter. They are always connected and they reflect each other. The other time a jade necklace was mentioned in this story is when Lindo's mother gave her her jade necklace the last time they saw each other. It holds a lot of cultural values but it mostly depicts the bond a mother and daughter shares.
June went ahead and received a jade pendant from Suyuan after the crab dinner. The significance of the pendant is the relationship between both June and Suyuan. A mother and daughter relationship. It shows that she will always have a part of her mother with her even if she is gone. Its the connection between the mother and daughter. Suyuan gives the pendant hoping to fulfill all June’s hopes and dreams.
I think Suyuan gave her daughter the Jade pendant to show her her own worth. June always settles for less than she deserves, even when at the crab dinner. knowing that the crab without the leg would be bad luck or wouldn't taste the same as the others, she still took it instead of leaving it for her mother. Suyuan wants her to know her life's purpose, to show her that she's worth more than she makes it seem for herself.
Towards the end of the chapter , June takes her mother’s place in her kitchen. She complaints just like Suyuan did about the tenants. She fixes a meal for her father. She tries to shoo the cat away and is equally unsuccessful. She has taken the role that her mother once had.
June shows that she identifies with her mother by wearing the jade pendant that her mother gave to her every day. June continuously thinks about what the jade pendant could have meant and what her life's importance is. "...I also know they would tell me a meaning that is different from what my mother intended. What if they tell me this... What if my mother really meant..." (Tan 197). Even though June has lost her mother, she continues to have a deep connection with her through the pendant. She tries to think of what the pendant could symbolize, but she knows that she will truly never know what her mother was trying to convey through the gift of the pendant. However, she continues to remember her mother's sayings, wear the jade pendant, and remembers the cat that her mother would always try to shoo away.
June could identify with her mother through the jade pendant. This necklace held a special and deep meaning for June. In which June soon realize served as a purpose to demonstrate motherly love and to show how caring she's towards her. The necklace makes their bond stronger .
1. What is the significance of the crab quality and who they’re given to? 2. What does Waverly do to assert her dominance over June? How do their parents react? What does this say about Waverly and June’s parents/mothers’ relationship with their daughter? 3. Why does June take a bad crab while everyone else takes the better ones? What is this proof of? 4. How does the Jade pendant connect with the crabs?
1. The jade pendant connects to the crabs because Waverley chooses the best crab but Suyuan says it doesn't walk correctly while even Junes crab she chose had a broken leg, her crab was able to walk right showing June is more humble but is more self aware and respectful than June.
3.June takes one of the worst crabs to give the better one to her mother. This is a significant event because it reflects the theme of sacrifice and selflessness. In a way, Jing Mei is showing part of her personality that comes from their mother. This Is a theme Amy Tan had introduced throughout the novel, that of principles and values that connect mothers and daughters. It shows the reflection between each other. The difference between how Waverly and June act, mirrors the similarities they have to their mother, making that the “best quality”.
2. During the dinner Waverly compliments June’s new haircut, then acts horrified when she learns that June goes to a gay hairstylist, who “could have AIDS.” Waverly recommends her own stylist, but quickly notes that he’s probably too expensive for June’s small budget. Waverly can’t just compliment June, she has to insult her as well, to feel more powerful.
During the dinner, June and Waverly had a bitter conversation that led to an argument about hair stylists, budgets and printing documents. June was tired of Waverly always judging her and having dominance over everything. She tried to humiliate Waverly but in the end, June humiliated herself. "...just like that, I was drowning and desperate." (Tan 205) June's work on the printed documents was done for nothing because it wasn't "sophisticated enough" by Waverly's standards. and to make things worst, a joke was made that got everyone laugh and being in Waverly's side, and even Suyuan, June's mother. Lindo and Waverly seem to have a good relationship (it's explainable by how grounded and confident the daughter is.) In the other hand, Suyuan and June don't have a good relationship (it's explainable by June's low self-esteem, and wanting to prove she's better than Waverly.)
The way June represents her mother is always looking out for others and are willing to sacrifice themselves for others. At dinner Suyuan says “No No! Big one, you eat it. I cannot finish” (Tan 202). Despite the idea that eating crab with a broken leg is bad luck, Suyuan was willing to take the bad luck for herself instead of her daughter. She understood that everyone else was going to get the best piece beside her and she was fine with it because she always wanted to give. Just like after her mother dying June takes care of her father even though the tenants are annoying and she has her own life going on.
The significance of the gold chain and jade pendant given to her was that it was to show Junes self worth when she thinks she doesn't have any but he mother knows her and shows her that she does have self worth and she doesn't have to keep comparing herself to others because she will always accept June as her daughter even if she isn't sophisticated.
The significance of the gold chain and jade pendant is how June is still important and still worth something in life. Meaning whenever June feels down or doesn’t feel like she is worth anything in life the pendant and gold chain will always be there for her. It’s her mom who will always be there by her side. Even if June isn’t like how Suyuan wants her to be. It’s her daughter and she will always be there for her.
1. Why does Waverley and June always fight with each other? What is the relationship between the moms and daughters? 2. What does the jade pendant represent to June? What was Suyuan trying to tell her daughter? 3. What is the difference between Waverley and June in their goal in life? 4. How does Suyuan show her love and tell June that she stands up for her daughter.
2. The jade pendant represents to June memories of her mother and it also represents Suyuan herself when she is not there anymore because Suyuan mentioned how she had wore this jade pendant and kept it with her the whole time and is passing it on to June and told her to wear it as well and she will understand her meaning, and how the necklace will become more and more green as June wears it kind of like her growth.
She becomes closer to her mother by learning more about her gifts and how her mother perceives her emotions. As when she chooses the maimed crab instead of the better one it shows to her mother her compassion.
June didn't confront Suyuan and instead hears her out and Suyuan took the crab which was bad because she knew that June would take it which shows she cares and gives her the pendant.
June listens and takes in what her mother Suyuan says instead of fighting back and rebel against Suyuan, and June would also ask Suyuan things she doesn't understand.
What is revealed about June's character when she chooses the crab with the broken leg? How might this connect to the "life importance" Suyuan mentioned?
June is selfless, she wanted to give her mother the better crab .June notices that her mom didn't even touch the crab that was missing a leg. Suyuan says she didn't eat it because it died before it was even cooked, so it was bad. June wants to know why her mom even cooked it then. Her mom responds that she knew no one but June would ever pick it, because everyone else selects things that are top quality. Suyuan takes off her necklace and gives it to June. She says that when June wears it, she will know her mother's meaning. She tells her daughter that the pendant is June's "life importance."
What is the significance of Lindo being the one to talk and say something again first after the long and awkward pause in the conversation after June was humiliated by Waverly and even Suyuan?
1.What does Jing-Mei learn due to Waverly's comment about her and how does it help her understand the importance of her selflessness
