Generation Z isn’t a lost generation, this is due to the fact that connecting with people around the world is done quicker, diversity is all around us, distinct values are what makes everyone unique, and we take the pessimistic thoughts and events and turn it into a funny meme. It is true that Gen Z suffers the most anxiety and depression. With the overload of work and the high standards given by our parents, money is a requirement to survive in this world. As Adam Piore’s interview with Zack Bauders for Newsweek states “Bauder didn't graduate from the University of Texas last month with a degree… related to the visual arts. Instead, he chose actuarial science… that will ensure he always has a well-paying job… applying those skills and getting rewarded for it." (Piore Adam, Newsweek) In this day in age, sometimes a student will take the high road and choose a career that pays good money instead of a career they are truly passionate about. College is a one-way ticket to debt, this will add stress and could turn one into an economic train wreck. Because the world is coming of age, the rise in mental health problems increases. This is relevant to me because at times I’ll sleep with anxiety after completing all my homework, and in my mind I’m afraid that I’m missing something, WHICH ISN’T HEALTHY! In a positive light, what I’ve seen about Gen Z is that we are open-minded and are advocates for fighting for what’s right. We are even trying to fix the mistakes the older generations have done to this country and the environmental factors of our slowly dying world. As Melissa Batchelor Warnke from Los Angeles Times states “How fortunate we are that members of Gen Z are devoting their adolescents to correcting our country’s painful course, the conditions of which elder generations created… It’s time for us to honor that work by seeing them deeply, hearing them clearly, and taking their values with the same seriousness we allow our own… in time, these young people will take many seats at the table. We should welcome them, not diminish or patronize them.” (Warnke Melissa, L.A.T) I agree with this quote because this is what a mature adult with an open mind should say to the older conservative people of those ancient times. The people of Gen Z speak their minds loudly without shame and restrictions. I found this interesting because it’s true. In conclusion, with loads of anxiety, paperwork, and high standards, this doesn’t stop us from completing our tasks and with the satire comedy that the older generations doesn’t understand, we use memes and dark humor as a survival mechanism to get through the dark times and the complicated world we live in. We are not a lost generation.
I agree and disagree with Generation Z isn't a lost generation. I agree that Generation Z is more diverse than ever and can connect with people around us. However, I also think that Generation Z is a lost generation because there is so much stress/ pressure put on generation Z with the economy rising and trying to achieve their dreams while still being able to support themselves like Alyson Pisarcik. "She says the growing size of her college loans persuaded her early on to set aside her "obsession" with political science and dreams of working for the UN, once she learned of the meager salary she could expect. Now, even though she has secured a job at Accenture, a big consulting company, the looming debt remains a constant source of worry for her."( Adam Piore). The struggle to make ends meet and risk forces Generation Z to lose their creativity and dreams just to make sure they have money to survive which can also be the problem for their Anxiety and depression. I can agree and disagree with your statement but can't choose a side.
I agree both and disagree of you. Gen Z is living in diverse as better technologies we got. Which let people easier to access resources and which eventually let more poor people became successful and become a company executive. But wealth, social status, and power are inherited because our society is a line of hereditary succession. In other words, the banker's children will become bankers (Mayer Amschel Rothschild, Nathaniel Philip Victor James Rothschild), the politician's children will become politicians (George HW Bush and George W. Bush), and the children of celebrities will become celebrities (Kardashian family). The world is still running by old money's "old idea".
"Generation Z isn’t a lost generation, this is due to the fact that connecting with people around the world is done quicker, diversity is all around us, distinct values are what makes everyone unique, and we take the pessimistic thoughts and events and turn it into a funny meme" -- I LOVE THIS!
Generation Z is a lost generation because many people experience anxiety and fear of the unknown, which has led to the loss of people’s true values and dreams. The term “Lost Generation” was originally used to define the post-World War I generation who experienced moral and physical loss, which led to their pessimistic mindset. Generation Z experiences constant worries because they observe Generation X’s mistakes. Generation Z calculates the risks and looks for security instead. According to Adam Piore’s article, he interviewed Zack Bauder and Bauder explains, “‘If you had told me I would be a successful nature photographer or landscape photographer, I would have done it in a heartbeat… But that's not a sure thing. I knew I was good at math and I could apply those skills and get rewarded for it’”(Piore Adam, Newsweek). Generation Z has experienced many events like the financial crisis of 2008 and gun violence. These instances and the voices of their parents who constantly remind them to be careful, that your decisions matter, and to do what is best for your future leads to Generation Z’s constant worry about what the future will hold and how to protect themselves from a potential life changing event. Personally, one of the main questions that my parents ask is that if you do this, will it benefit you in the long run. That is what most of Generation Z keeps in mind when making decisions. Even though the generation may be focusing on causing change to occur, especially when considering issues like global warming, their focus is derived from all of the fears of making mistakes and to not repeat the past mistakes. As stated in Melissa Batchelor Warnke’s article in the Los Angeles Times, “The teens of the Sunrise Movement are fighting for a future with humans in it. Survivors of gun violence, led by the students of Parkland, Fla., are fighting for Americans’ safety’”(Warnke Melissa , Los Angeles Times). The awareness that is raised about various issues is the result of the experiences that Generation Z lives through or are constantly reminded by Generation X. Generation Z is trying to fix the mistakes of the previous generations and the current lives of many because of their pessimistic mindset. I was intrigued by the fact that these articles truly depicted the lives that Generation Z experiences. The stress and anxiety that I experience on a daily basis does cause me to plan out my future and not take as many risks as I should. The experiences that have occurred in the past have influenced Generation Z’s perspective on life, thus causing Generation Z to have a pessimistic mindset that causes them to stick to risk free choices rather than following their own values just like the “Lost Generation.”
I agree that Generation Z is suffering the most from mental health like 91 percent of young adults said they had felt physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress, such as depression or anxiety"(Adam Piore). This mental health problem is probably form the pressure placed on Generation Z with the development of the world and the economy going higher forces Generation Z to lose their dreams because they don't believe they can do what they love while getting a stable income becoming more "risk averse". For example, Alyson Pisarcik who is from Generation Z gave up on what she wanted to become because "the growing size of her college loans persuaded her early on to set aside her "obsession" with political science and dreams of working for the UN, once she learned of the meager salary she could expect."(Adam Piore). The Generation is losing the creativity they could have and are just focus on being able to make a living instead of doing what they love which can cause the mental illness. I also agree with College is a part of why Generation Z is focusing on making money because most jobs required a college degree but colleges can cause many to be in huge debts and stories can be heard of people that were never able to pay off their debt . This causes Generation Z to have a faster pace because they hear stories of the peoples experience which wants to make them have " a greater sense of Urgency". I also agree with growing up in a different environment because there a new problems created by the last generations appeared, puts a lot more pressure on Generation Z to change that causing them to quickly mature faster. I feel like a lost generation personally because I have lost a sense of my culture/traditions of where my family came from because of my family came to make ends meet to live. I don't know how to speak or write my own language or know when are the holidays which is important to me because I feel like it is a piece of my identity. It makes me feel like I lost a part of myself. I also have been gaining more and more stress and my mental health, like said in the articles have been terrible. I can only think of the pressure of the future and how I would make ends meet because the stakes are getting higher and higher. I also do have a dream of what I want to do in the future but that dream seems impossible because of how risky it is. Because of the environment I am in and the way things work in the economy right now, I feel like I am a lost generation.
I strongly agree with you when you said that Generation Z is losing the creativity that was present in previous generations. This loss of creativity is causing the generation to continuously follow the trends of others and while there may be a few creative minds, everyone else is sticking to their comfort zone. Generation Z is putting themselves into a box where they only limit themselves to decisions where safety is key. The generation is afraid of making mistakes, which leads to the loss of wanting to chase their dreams. According to Piore’s interview with Ordoff, Ordoff says, “‘...they see that their older brothers and sisters are graduating with a lot of debt and entering a tough job market out there, that if they don't really lean into trying to find an internship or two or three, they are not going to set themselves apart’”(Piore Adam, Newsweek). Generation Z does constantly worry about the future (like you said), which leads to their competitive nature. However, this competitiveness should be used for their own benefit and not to just follow what is expected of them, which is financial stability and a successful life. Even though there may be a lot of people chasing for jobs, this causes the generation to not focus on living their life, but to constantly plan for it. As the generation goes to college, they worry about what major will provide them with a well paying job, whether the job will be available to them right after college, and how to have an advantage in order to be one step further than anyone else who is seeking for the similar job. Instead of being present and in the moment, later on in life, Generation Z may probably say that they feel like they were constantly chasing and never living. They were searching, and yet they did not get to appreciate the little things in life and were not able to live in special moments because their mind was constantly thinking about what will benefit them. Therefore, I strongly agree with the idea that Generation Z is a lost generation because they are constantly living in between the lines instead of in the moment.
I strongly agree both of you. Every rich will discover world and have passion about new things just like Tom and Daisy. With enough money who will care if go to top college or get fire? Instead of having big dreams, Gen Z should think about what to do with the credit card bill next month. Because not everyone is Gatsby, Mark Zuckerberg...ect.
After reading the following articles, I agreed and disagreed with a lot of the claims made in them. For one, I do disagree with the claim that maybe if someone was born a boomer and grown up with their generational message that you could be whatever you want to be. For Zack, the onr of the people in the first article that wasn't true. He was apart of generation Z and was very successful with his work. He was a photographer and quite a good one. He made something of himself. I do agree with the fact that Mental health is a huge theme for Generation Z based on personal experience and what I see going on around me. It was mostly school related for the people in the article and it caused them to fall into depression. It shows that Gen Z is definitely a hard working generation. In the second article, the topic of anxiety and mental health shows up again. I agree with that because I see it all around me and feel the anxiety myself that society puts on us. We are almost always desiring stability just as much as boomers and millennials do. After reading these articles, my opinion of Gen Z changed. Their not just 12 year old fornite players or monkey-see, monkey-do, type of people. Their actually hardworking and they go through stress just like boomers did. Just in a different level. No, we didn't fight in wars or go though half the things they did but we still can make or made something of ourselves. Gen Z has morals and values just like Generation X did. I feel like everyday, we get better at life although it is hard. We always strive for the better things and accomplish new things. Always coming up with new and fresh ideas that could help the world. We're not perfect, but we're not bad either.
After reading both articles, both authors made really good points about how Gen Z are a lost generation. We're all lost in our own world, we think that the only thing that can protect us from the cruel world is our own. Seeing how corrupted the world is, it just corrupt us even more, it's b/c of this harsh world that we are acting like the way we act or talk the way we talk. As people around us spits lies into our ears everyday, we listen to them to the point where our mentality starts making us think it's the truth. Also, everyone around us has such a high expectation that if we don't meet it, it's like our whole world is falling apart. And b/c of this high expectation, no one helps us when we are in need. It's our generation against the world, we are the lost cause, no one has the time for us. We put so much pressure on ourselves to the point where it gets toxic. It's no wonder that our mentality is literal shit. By hearing BS from other people and putting too much pressure on us, our issues starts to pile up. The stress that this world gives on us, it't too much to handle sometimes. Adam Piore said "The numbers could be pointing to a rise in mental health problems due to the stress of coming of age in the world as it currently is." We're just people, more than that, we're human, there's only so much we can take until we explode. I think that's why people commit suicide and falls into depression. Related to what Adam Piore said people believes we have to be so damn perfect all the time to be successful, that we start to think that we have to be perfect, so when we fail a test or things doesn't go our way, we beat ourselves up so much. Which build up mental problems that won't be able to be cured as long as this world and it's people are corrupted. For example, the amount of stress school gives us on a daily basis is too overwhelming. Then when they ask if we're okay, it't stupid b/c it's their fault we're going though this stress. Who said to give so many test and so many hw. Half of the stress we go through it's b/c of teachers. So in one way our mental issues are caused by teachers. However, we get it, teachers are giving stress b/c they want us to be successful so we can survive in the future. But how long can we maintain this stress, at some point we have to give up and let go. So yes, Gen Z is a lost generation.
I agree with you, saying we're a lost generation. We have our ancestors to blame for leaving us with a world which is going to end due to the mistakes made by humans. What do we have to live for if we can't live on earth. Gen Z is the generation who is trying to take a stand against the bad things which have led to this point, but real change has not been made, so we're hopeless. We also think that nobody understands us except ourselves, since we deal with so much stuff which isn't easy to talk about. I also agree that there's a lot of pressure on us to be the next big thing, we're supposed to come in and save everyone. We're humans and we can't always live up to the high expectations we face. We've been going to school, ad stressed out ever since we were 6. We need a break. -Emma Jumpelt
Gen Z is the Lost Generation. I disagree with "Survivors of gun violence, led by the students of Parkland, Fla., are fighting for Americans’ safety," from The emerging media narrative on Gen Z is very, very wrong. Why I disagree? Because these students apparently didn't check U.S. laws well before the strike status. Not to mention that most students use this excuse to go home and sleep. According to The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution reads: "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." (Very is lucky to have Mr. Greenberg). Not doing the research before doing things is clearly the "lost generation." I agree with "91 percent of young adults said they had felt physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress, such as depression or anxiety," (Gen Zs are Anxious, Entrepreneurial and Determined to Avoid Their Predecessor's Mistakes). Life for Gen Z is super stressful, (except rich second generation). Right now I have AP Exams, SAT, Regents...etc coming out; countless homework, extracurricular choices for a good university in order to get a good job in order to pay off the Student Loan, Mortgage, Car Loan...etc. We are lost is not because we are sheep; is because we don't have the capital to avoid to becoming Lost Generation.
I agree with ChuanWu on his point with it being stressful and there's many things and exams that we have to take in order to get a good job which for the first few years we might have to use that earning for paying off things like student loans. I disagree with ChuanWu's point on how we are lost because we don't have the capital to avoid to becoming lost generation because we are just ignorant of how things work in modern society and we can avoid not having enough capital.
I agree with a lot of points in both articles and I think they were relevant ones too. I definitely agree with Gen Z being determined to avoid the mistakes of those that came before them. Growing up in a world where we know a lot of what went wrong in the years before us, it makes us knowledgeable. But I don’t believe Gen Z is necessarily anxious; I think it’s more like wariness and skepticism. It’s a source of our anger and is the motivator for how we live our lives. We are a little more careful though, we analyze things before jumping headfirst into things. I disagree with the statement of being risk-adverse. We’re more willing to take risks if it means it’ll help bring much-needed change. We’re doing so many more proactive things and protesting on the behalf of our beliefs. But we deal with our shifting society in a different way compared to the post-WW1 people; I believe that we aren’t backing out because of our fears; we pay attention and chase our dreams with a practical mindset instead of completely giving up.
I strongly believe that we are a lost generation. Being a part of a lost generation means being cynical, pessimistic and disillusioned about society. It also includes the loss of values, identity and tradition shared by previous generations. I know I don’t share my way of thinking with how my parents think; I don’t value the same things they do. My friends and I feel incredibly cynical and pessimistic about our lives and society. We’ve all had conversations and experiences that reflect our dissatisfaction to our society. Said in the first article,“Many in the generation coming up do not "have the same utter trust in the adults to figure everything out and that that they'll make sure everything works perfectly."” (Adam Piore) The faith in adults is lessening and we try to take things into our own hands. We as an entire generation believe that the world we live in is flawed and needs to be fixed permanently. The inability to do anything of value to fix things makes us angry. We also all live our lives based on pleasure, we do the things that makes us happy instead of what is right. I think that’s similar to the lifestyle led by the 1920’s generation. The difference in how we live compared to our predecessors and how we think based on our reflections makes us a lost generation.
I agree on when you said that Gen Z wants to avoid any mistakes, like what I said we're under the impression of always being perfect. It's just how we grew up, and how we learned from our peers and parents. But we can make a difference, make sure the next generation doesn't fall under the same impression. It's our time now to start changing how everything is.
I believe that Gen z is a lost generation because of how how much stress we have now and anxiety. News seek states “91 percent of of young adults said they had felt physical or emotions symptoms associated with stress such as depression and anxiety” (Piore Adam, Newsweek) this shows how this is the generation that is the most stressed. People are stressed about not being financially stable and aren’t following their dreams and Instead are taking other routes for money instead of doing what they really want to . It’s easy to say follow your passion but it’s hard to when you have to worry about paying bills and being stable and you can risk many things. Also we don’t have the same values as our Parents and think it’s not important instead we spend most out time in Social Media and trying to look good for other people and have beliefs such as popularity is important and to be pretty you have to Look a certain way which isn’t true. After the war people didn’t care about living they thought the earth was dying many people can’t release their inner artist follow their passion instead they have a 9-5 job. I agree with “ if you had told me I would be a successful nature photographer or landscape photographer, I would have done it in a heartbeat” (Piore Adam, Newsweek) from the news seek. This is how many people feel they fear that If they follow their passion they won’t become successful and many people aren’t and if they knew that they would be successful then many people would many people would follow their passions. For example Gatsby followed his passion which was daisy even though he was blinded and couldn’t see the reality he still followed his passion which many of gen z don’t do. I also agree that mental health is a big part of gen z many of our generation have anxiety that doesn’t allow them to be happy and makes them constantly be worried and who wouldn’t their is so much to worry the president, paging bills and college debt the earth slowly dying which doesn’t allow us to be ourselves follow our passions. But our generation looks at the good side of things and find the funny things in the worst moments but I believe we are a lost generation living with fear.
I very much agree with the arguments you've made. We have so much to handle every single day. We've been dealing with school for so many years, constantly being tested on our abilities in things we won't even need in our future. Having the number on a sheet of paper determine our whole future, when we're so much more than that. We have so many skills which schools won't let us show. Added on to that comes the mental health issues, the ongoing need to fit in and be perfect all the time. This is why we like to isolate ourselves. In order to take a step back and breathe. It's not easy growing up in a world that is dying, and also trying to stay positive for the future. We are lost in the worst way possible. -Emma Jumpelt
I disagree on the statement that we are a lost generation because of stress and anxiety It's more like how we deal with that stress and anxiety that makes us a lost generation. But I do agree with what you're saying about the limitations in our newer society and how it affects our outlook on life. And the disconnection with parents and living life for different reasons. Social media is an interesting part in how we are a lost generation. It's different than Fitzgerald's generation where they used media to critique and bring attention to the flaws of their society. We use social media as a way to distract us from the reality and make ourselves numb to avoid having to take responsibility.
I agree with the point that students have rising debt and leave college with debt. I also agree that graduates are being hired at a higher rate than before. According to the article “Gen Z’s are Anxious, Entrepreneurial, and Determined Avoid Their Predecessors Mistakes ” And employers are planning on hiring about 17 percent more new graduates for jobs in the U.S. this year than last.”( Andrew Piore ) I agree that Gen Z has increased the employment rate and that they have also decreased pay for the previous generation. Gen Z are practical and cautious. Debt is a problem for Gen Z, and some college seniors suffer from anxiety and stress. According to “Gen Zs are Anxious Entrepreneurial, and Determined to Avoid Their Predecessors Mistakes “ For instance, the gig economy has made it harder to predict where you will end up and how long you will stay in your present job.”( Andrew Piore ) This quote illustrates how Gen Z has economic challenges. I agree with the article that Gen Z is an entrepreneurial generation. In the article, “The emerging media narrative on Gen Z is very, very wrong” the author wrote about how members of Gen Z are fighting against gun violence. I agree with this because there has been a lot of Gen Z protests against gun violence. “ The teens of the sunrise movement are fighting for a future with humans in it. Survivors of gun violence, led by the students of Parkland, Fla., are fighting for Americans safety.” (The emerging media narrative on Gen Z is very, very wrong). This quote illustrates how Gen Z is acting against Gun violence to improve Americans safety.
Generation Z is a lost generation where members are constantly worried about the exponentially progresive society. Where as consequence brings more uncertainty, and anxiety for their aims and values to suffer an earthquake. The definition of "Lost Generation" was the generation reaching maturity during and just after World War I, a high proportion of whose men were killed during those years. Or an unfulfilled generation coming to maturity during a period of instability. With Generation Z they experience worries and concerns due to the habit of being cautious and sturdy. Where they may have developed by watching the past mistakes of Millennials and Generation X , such as the 2008 financial crisis caused by their improvident in stock investment as well as their Greed in using the same Balance sheet over and over. In Mellisa Batchlor Warnke's article of Los Angeles Times, "This generation, the first to come of age with an understanding that ecological collapse is not a dystopian movie premise but a real likelihood, is dedicated to public action and public service. Its members appreciate that their full lives will unfurl in a state of emergency. Driven by that knowledge, they look down, sure, but more often and more powerfully they look out; the Gen Z I know is comprised of bold and original thinkers."(Warnke Melissa , Los Angeles Times) I agree and disagree, the part I disagree is we are not the first generation to understand the ecological collapse. I believe that belongs to the Silent Generation and Baby Boomer Generation timeline where It contain many legendary writers of dystopian society, such as George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, and Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange, where all inspired by We a Silent Generation work by Yevgeny Zamyatin. I do agree that we are down due to knowing the previous mistakes also dystopian concepts of society are more vivid than ever. I believe earlier Zs are more bold and more original. For the 90s Nokia 9000 was the only phone that had the internet. Thus access to information is limited making a head start to be more original than the late 00s. In New Week’s article “Gen Zs are Anxious, Entrepreneurial and Determined to Avoid Their Predecessor's Mistakes.” It states "Generation Z are looking for more certainty and stability, because of the rise of the gig economy. They have trouble seeing a financial future and they are quite risk averse." I agree with this point for Many Gen Zs. They have seen the 2008 financial crisis where their parents' incomes are cut short, as well as 911 following the fear of terrorism. Thus naturally the sense of survival which is enhanced with surviving mistakes and knowing consequences of action will increase with these stimulus. I believe we are a Lost Generation for we have the same pessimistic and Pragmatic mindset as the previously recognized Lost Generation. Where we want vivid understanding of what is to come, and expected before conducting certain actions. This leads to us talking less risk, and preceded as Lazy or even Parasites by Preceding generations. But there is still hope, for it is to be ready for inevitable failure, and scarred by abrasion of bitter winds of life.
I see your point. I think our generation does worry too much because of the pressure that's put on us. We are the future and we have a lot of responsibility.
Gen Z isn't a lost generation. I agree with the article Gen Zs are Anxious, Entrepreneurial and Determined to Avoid Their Predecessor's Mistakes by Adam Piore. Piore writes that "88 percent of graduating seniors this year chose their major with a job in mind. In a 2019 survey of University of Georgia students, meanwhile, the career office found the most desirable trait in a future employer was the ability to offer secure employment (followed by professional development and training, and then inspiring purpose). Job security or stability was the second most important career goal (work-life balance was number one), followed by a sense of being dedicated to a cause or to feel good about serving the greater good that's a big change from the previous generation. Millennials wanted more flexibility in their lives." I find it cool that these graduates decide to become more responsible and smarter with the choices they make. Others decide to lay back and take a break after they get their education. Which is okay to an extent, but some take it too far and don't strive for more. The graduates who finish school and continue to be better by looking for more work, jobs, or careers set a great example for teens. But it isn't always easy it takes dedication. This generation isn't perfect but it's promising if we do the right things in life.
I agree with you that Gen Z isn't a lost generation because Gen Z want Job security and they are mostly college students. Gen Z are also very entrepreneurial. According to a survey conducted by the national Association of Colleges and Employers, "employers are looking to hire on 17% more graduates this year than last year." This illustrates how Gen Z can pursue their ambition, and how they are a promising Generation.
Gen Z is a lost generation in the sense that everyone is less connected to the world around them but we’re also more expressive and able to tell others about our emotions better than previous generations. Also, more social concepts are excepted which would make us more rebellious and “lost” in the eyes of millennials and boomers. There’s definitely many differences in how we were raised in comparison to other generations but we’re not lost unless you think about our reliance on technology
I disagree as even though we use our technology in an over reliant manner there is also a way for people that struggle with outside personal connections to use technology to benefit them. Technology is our future and I think that more changes are going to come through technology as we learn and understand the inner workings better. We are twice as much because were connected as technology has enabled us to talk to people from across states and countries by certain apps and we can talk to people to help us with our emotions and problems we face in everyday life.
I disagree with the statement that we are a lost generation and also that everyone is less connected with the world. I feel as if us teens have a sense of our community and surroundings more than any other generation. We have started many movements such as Greta Thunberg who leads a very impactful movement that targets the many problems with today's society and she’s only 16. You also pointed out that we are more expressive toward one another and share our feelings which shows how we are not a lost generation. We understand our wants and needs at a young age. We are able to communicate these feelings tackling our problems head on instead of passively.
I disagree that Gen Z is a lost generation because if we were less connected with the world how can we be more expressive. Personally, I just think that our generation is more outgoing and we like to thrive for more. Definitely, our generation is more different than the previous generations. Due to the fact, we have technology, phones, and social media. But that's what makes our generation the generation to cause major change and different. However, I do get where you're coming from but I guess the the benefits and the goods of our generation outweighs its lost in our generation.
Regarding the first article, I think people who are part of gen-z aren’t only risk averse because of an unpredictable economy but also because of feeling there isn’t a chance for them. Previous generations have had to live through things that people who are a part of gen-z haven’t. You can’t expect twins who grew up on different sides of the planet to be the same. So you cant expect everyone to have the same reason for being what the article called lazy and overall pessimistic. Looking at the world through a clear lens in order to secure a future we’re they have a job could be because of older generations saying the world is going to end because things are so different from when they grew up. People fear what they fail to understand unlike past generations this one doesn't have support from society to follow a career that will make them happy not only because it pays well but because they will enjoy doing it. But the future is mostly unpredictable and calling an entire generation lost is plain ignorant. It would be like calling someone who thinks differently but still gets the right answer, lost because they think differently. You might have heard the term you’ll understand when you're older. When I first heard this I thought no you're crazy, I know more than you, I was six. But as I’ve grown up I do think differently and realize that there are things that you can only learn with time. Viewing my generation from someone who is much older, looks very different from someone who is younger. Only considering one opinion out of so many on a subject would be inconclusive. You don't know what other people are thinking and you would be surprised when someone opens your mind to new ideas, all you have to do is ask. I found the second article to be more optimistic in what the future holds for gen-z. I agree with the idea of my generation fixing the problems created by past generations. Problems left for us to deal with. Climate change, government corruption just a few of the many problems my generation is and will be the ones to fix. Older generations haven’t been able to fix their problems because they haven’t felt the repercussions of their wrongs. However my generation is the one who will suffer for their mistakes. Being someone of an older generation and saying “Screw international cooperation, the actual Earth, and its most vulnerable people! I am smart and rational, young people are dumb and emotional!”(MELISSA BATCHELOR WARNKE) has no actual merit when older generations are the cause of problems in today’s world. Not only making them risk averse but more willing to secure an actual future. Gen-z is the way it is because of what past generations have done, we are a result of problems in the world and were molded to fix them during our impressionable age. I overall don’t think my generation is lost. Just because your different doesn’t mean it’s a bad thing.
It's extremely upsetting to know that people always generalize their statements once they come in contact with a few similar cases. Just like what you had said, "you can't expect everyone to have the same reason" is important to take in. Many people don't think to put themselves into other people's shoes. And I really liked when you discussed about the term "the lost generation" and pointed out its absurdity. Different viewpoints exist, discussions over viewpoints exist, disagreements over viewpoints also exist so why is it that people just pick on others for having a viewpoint that differs from their own? Also LMAO @ 6 years old you. And past generations are really harsh on the current generations...even though we are the ones who have to clean up and fix their mistakes...
I liked how you explained your point with: “It would be like calling someone who thinks differently but still gets the right answer, lost because they think differently.” Just because we don’t share the same perspective as the previous generations doesn’t mean they are any less wise or right. We aren’t a lost generation because we will all have to inevitably fix the mistakes our predecessors failed to overcome. We have become more assertive with the changes we want to see and are willing to stick up for ourselves and others.
I do not consider Gen Z to be a lost generation. As a member of Generation Z our actions do not correlate with the description of a lost generation. One definition is an unfulfilled generation coming to maturity during a period of instability. I feel as if we are somewhat opposites, we are the most driven/goal-oriented generation, with fighting for what we believe in and expressing how, to better ourselves. This is seen in many aspects of our lives, especially when it comes to our futures. As we grow up and head to college competition has increased. As a student in the 11th grade I agree everyone wants to get into that elite school and graduate, making six figures while maintaining a flourishing lifestyle. This is seen in News Weekly as they interviewed Bob Orndoff who works in career services at Penn State when he says “career coaching appointments have been close to "maxed out”. Showing not only are we aiming for that degree but for a career that will bring in money and stability. Another reason we are not part of the lost generation is because we are able to address problems and try to address them. A prime example is the talks on Mental Health which Gen Z’ers are not afraid to talk about and we celebrate talking about our Mental health to recognize we face similar problems, and promoting helping each other get through it. As a whole we are very aware of the many events and things that occur which we respond to. The article in the LA times mentions “the Sunrise Movement” and “the students of Parkland Fl” to show the progressiveness and fierce attitude we have. The article also states “Gen Z are devoting their adolescents to correcting our country’s painful course, the conditions of which elder generations created or enabled by our inaction”. Giving more opinions of the progressiveness of Gen Z’ers as a determined group. This shows why Generation Z should not be considered a lost generation with our determined and thoughtful acts we are far from lost and are headed in a direction of prosperity.
First off, great job in stating your opinion, I agree with the statement "we are the most driven/goal-oriented generation, with fighting for what we believe in and expressing how, to better ourselves." This is very true, we live in times of desperate need to better out society, and our government. I believe that our generation will make extreme changes to how the world works and currently is. Also when you stated "A prime example is the talks on Mental Health which Gen Z’ers are not afraid to talk about and we celebrate talking about our Mental health to recognize we face similar problems, and promoting helping each other get through it." When talking with friends, or even being on the internet, now a days it's easier to find someone who's out there living the current situations your in, mental awareness is more recognizable, and I agree that we as Gen Z'ers do help each other in going through stress and problematic situations.
I agree that we probably are the most goal-oriented generations because many of us have established our own values and we have painted the road for what we want our future to be. I truly believe many of us aren’t as sad and pathetic as we make ourselves appear on social media. As much as mental health is impacting a majority of our generation, we haven’t given up because we want to make something out of ourselves. As we all grow in a world that is constantly changing, with new technological advancements and new ideas being we are all pushed to move forward and there isn’t any time to be lost.
Our generation isn't a lost generation as we continue to progress and we try to become better by improving ourselves. As we as a generation became more concerned by the past mistakes of the generations that were before us. We continue to become better by trying to learn from our mistakes as shown by the people in the second article protesting seeing the big picture of climate change and the effects of that being allowed to happen than just standing there and sitting by. We continue to try and make something better for ourselves even while the people around us criticize and call us lazy and scared. We go play by play and try being more successful by taking risks so we can achieve our desires of economic stability.
I do agree that we continue to progress and try to become better but as pressure grows on us to take on responsible rolls to better society it could be a lot to take in as the past generation looks and judges us with the privilege we have been given being born in this era. As depression grows and people not voting because rarely no one cares about politics anymore and the mainstream media always points the finger at us and keep blaming can discourage one living in this generation.
I want to say that I agree with your point that you made about our generation. I would also, have to say that our generation isn't a lost generation. Yes, in some ways our generation can be "lost", we can be so driven with having technology and too focused on the small stuff. But that's what makes our generation different and extraordinary. To add on, to what you said about our generation trying to become better than the previous generation. Our time is more about creating a change in our society and world for a better future.
Both articles had made some good points on our current generation, gen Z. I came to the conclusion that gen Z is a lost generation. It has seemed to be due to the fact that there’s a lot of expectation of us. Especially due to the fact that we were born at a time that the internet was invented and we were blessed with many technological improvements. As with the internet, we can learn a lot be most choose not to and only a handful, and maybe a little more than that, had taken advantage of it and will lead in the future. In the meantime, many gen Z kids are still taking in the world at hand and most avoid reality and go into a portable world that most of us have in our pocket. School seems so much harder especially since it’s a competition to get into the best ones, including colleges, having to deal with studies, student loans, mental health and other factors that are beyond one’s control. All of this causes us to have stress as “ 91 percent of young adults said they had felt physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress, such as depression or anxiety”(Adam Piore). The “young adults” I believed are the people coming of ages of 18-21 in which some or most don’t know what to do in life and take the route that is not in their interest but a life that can guarantee them a little bit of wealth. As I do agree that gen z is “clear-eyed”(Adam Piore), but at the same time, we are clouded with ideas and thoughts that cloud our vision and make us believe of choosing the alternative route and not going for our dreams because of it’s financial situation or discouragement of the gen z. Especially myself who does decently in school I really don’t know what do and it’s getting close to that time to grow up and take up a new line of responsibility that could be seen as so much and impossible to rule out. Even in a time of where social media is the main focus of teens right now how we judge ourselves based on another person on the web and make that comparison that could affect us in the long run.
I liked how you explained your own situation in this, but I do disagree with your point. Gen Z isn't a lost generation. So many feelings and beliefs were hidden or even trapped in the past. This generation isn't lost, we have found our way. We are becoming even more accepting of different communities. The amount of stereotypes that are being broken is immaculate. We are NOW beginning to fight for not just a couple of races and beliefs, we are fighting for all. We are learning about all the rise of diversity, not only in person, but through social media influencers. There has been many examples in our society today of entrepreneurial businesses rising. Showing that we are also becoming more innovative. We are finally coming out and expressing our ideas. Tons of people even are using the internet to express political viewpoints and current enduring issues. There are so many people who learn from the internet and help teach others as well. That is why I believe Gen Z isn't lost. I believe we are finally finding our way.
I believe that the Gen Z generation is a lost generation. The Gen Z generation had grown up in an era in which technology is our number one friend and tool whenever we need it. Roberta Katz, senior research scholar at Stanford University, who spent the last two years researching a book about Generation Z, says "They are growing up in a different environment. “ (Piore ) Our generation is at its top and advanced and when it comes to technology we often rely on it too much that things are done faster and efficient with it. We can say we rely on it too much that we don’t always get the experiences and mistakes our older generations made. We are expected to know them already but in order to improve ourselves we must have experience. But most technology does it for for. I feel like the older generations, the millennials , have more knowledge on how things should be run around the world, since they were exposed to new experiences throughout their life time. I believe that we definitely live in a different world where not only our decisions or affect us as a generation but we are also being judged by the millennials. We are at a point where everything we is going unique and different that us the gen z generation might like and agree with it, but not all millennials would agree. For example, “the gig economy has made it harder to predict where you will end up and how long you will stay in your present job. And increasingly...companies have changed the traditional office culture, making the workplace itself seem portable and less permanent. “ In my opinion I think them at the millennials were a more sophisticated and organized. I would think this was because of their backgrounds, roots, and past “ recent ” events that happened that nearly impacted them as well. Based on their experiences they would find ways to organize themselves in a way to incorporate functional society basic laws and rules. People use to work at a job for an extended amount of period but as time past each generation’s work hours for a certain job would change. Often the Gen z generation would go from job to job quickly moving from one place to another to find what best suits them and it keeps happening which is why it was considered a “mess”. Knowing that it is causing a mess it is still being done because our generation is indecisive, lacking the sufficient ability to stay in a position for a job for an extended amount of time. “How fortunate we are that members of Gen Z are devoting their adolescences to correcting our country’s painful course, the conditions of which elder generations created or enabled by our inaction.”(Warnke)Even though we as a general have a different mindset from others we still contain that devotion of if continuing on with our lives.
I disagree with gen-z being a lost generation. However I agree with technology playing an important role in our lives today. We are like no other generation before us. We grew up different and are different but I don’t think that makes you lost, just different. Thinking differently from generations who grew up in a different world doesn't make you lost but makes you unique. Gen-z compared to other generations has different opportunities. It’s unimaginable to think of starting a giant company like Apple in today’s world with a high success rate. Things are different, requiring different ways of thinking If previous generations can’t understand a different way of thinking then there the ones who will be lost.
Stephani I agree with the part where you said how Gen Z grew up with technology and basically our number one priority. As teenagers some of are so addicted to our phones. But in a way it’s not our fault. It the environment around us. Also the way we grew up. This is why the older generations tend to dislike us because of how attached we are to our phones and or other technologies. However we grew up differently from the other generations. So we tend to view things and do things differently.
Gen Z is anyone born from 1995 to 2015 according to kasasa.com. We are the newest generation to be “named” and we are the “blueprint” of the future. Both articles make very convincing points, reasonable points. “Gen Z may just turn out to be the most competent, productive and high achieving generation we've seen in awhile. In addition to being the most diverse generation in American history, they also are on track to be the most educated.” (Piore). I believe that our generation is quite cautious and mindful when it comes to decision making. We know that we should try our best to handle our money and problems, learning from most of the mistakes our elder cousins (millennials) and parents (Gen X) made. Our generation is the most diverse, we are intermingling with tons of different races and kinds. Having a mix in past generations wasn’t that common. Now, more than a third of all Gen Z population is of the mixed breed. A point I disagree with is, “Generation Zs are clear-eyed...Plagued by anxiety, they’re playing small, shelving their dreams, looking down. (Warnke). I don’t think we are exactly clear eyed, but I do think we have some idea of what’s right and wrong. We are the generation of correction. Past generations haven’t really given much attention to certain problems that our generation has begun to revolutionize. Past generations didn’t really put effort in fixing environmental issues, inequality in the LGBT community, and even veganism. This is all up in a rise now. We are the generation that “opened” our eyes and realized these dilemmas. We are finally taking a stand, we’re not completely “clear eyed” but we’re optimistic and trying to figure out how to solve these problems. We aren’t necessarily “shelving our dreams”, our dreams are to come together and make a significant change. Our dreams are still to pursue our hobbies and desires but our dreams also include how can we help save the earth, how can we help others feel welcomed/normal, how can we save more money, how can we stop the rise of corruption/overruling of corporations on society, and etc. We aren’t a lost generation, we are in fact the opposite. Generations before us were lost, we are the generation that found our way back to the straight path, hopefully bringing everyone together to success. We aren’t lost, we found each other. We love and accept unconditionally. We try our best not to repeat the mistakes of the past generations. All racism, environmental, and economic problems in our society were mainly caused by past generations. We are the generation that is getting ourselves together and finally taking a stand in this.
I would say that generation Z isn’t a lost generation. Yes, there are many drawbacks to the generation Z but that is because of the circumstances that we are living in. I am part of generation Z and so are many of my friends and I don't see us as a lost generation. I think if we were a “lost '' generation we would be more confused and wouldn't know what to do with our lives and be too spoiled. Also, not caring for social issues and world issues. However, generation Z is nowhere compared to fact. In fact, I think that we care and worry too much. Which causes for generation Z to have mental health issues and have anxiety. Generation z is too afraid of what's going to happen in the future if they want to pursue what they want. For example if they want to become a musician they fear that if their career doesnt blow off then who is going to pay for their monthly loans, rent, food, etc. Therefore, generation Z always tries to play the safe route so they can be stable and not worrying about something bad happening. According to Adam Piore article, he was discussing about how many of the college students have a backup plan just in case something doesn't go their way, when Adam was interviewing a student name Katrell Thompson-Nickey, he basically said “talked about his dreams of parlaying his music major into a lucrative career working as an audio engineer and a songwriter. Just in case that doesn't work out, however, he is pursuing a masters in music education.” This depicts that people in college have to constantly fear and feel anxious if something doesn't go they want, which leads to them having anxiety and mental health problems. As a result, that is why generation Z has such an increase rate of mental health like never before. Regardless, of generation Z having these drawbacks, the positives of generation Z outweighs it. They are our future and they’re working hard to make this world a better place like focusing on world issues like climate change, gun violence, removing the stigma away about talking about mental health. In the Los Angeles Times, Melissa Batchelor Warenke deliberating how many of the people from generation Z are creating social movement like the gun violence movement so then, it can help create awareness around that issue, she said “The teens of the Sunrise Movement are fighting for a future with humans in it. Survivors of gun violence, led by the students of Parkland, Fla.., are fighting for Americans’ safety. Like millennials before them, Gen Z is fighting for those living with mental illness and finding new ways to destigmatize and discuss suicidal thoughts.” This demonstrates how generation Z are trying to create change for the better, for a better future. And I agree with her saying that we are emotional because that helps us be rational and do something. To sum up, generation Z isn't a “lost '' generation we are just more advanced than the generation before us and we try to make the future better by learning from the mistakes the past generation made.
After reading both of the articles I came to the conclusion that Gen z is a lost generation. Both articles had many points that I agree with and disagree with. To start it off society as a whole has been through a lot. According to Newsweek.com it says “Mental health seems to be a theme with Generation Z. College seniors, in a survey last fall by the American Psychological Association, reported the worst mental health of any generation: 91 percent of young adults said they had felt physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress...” (Adam piore). Mental health is very important in today’s generation. Now us having mental health issues just makes us have more anxiety, depression, and fear. In this article it talks about a guy named Zack. He is apart of the generation z. Zack is a photographer and very successful with what he does. Now I agree with this part of the article. This is because you should do something that you truly enjoy to distract yourself from the issues of mental health. For me when I’m usually stressed out or overwhelmed I tend to draw or spend time with my family/friends so I can distract myself. Just like Zack you should do something you really enjoy for the better of yourself. It also says “Generation Z are looking for more certainty and stability, because of the rise of the gig economy. They have trouble seeing a financial future and they are quite risk averse."(Adam Piore). I disagree with this part of the article because I feel like our generation actually make a lot of risks. Sometimes when we make decisions we find it hard to. We usually end up picking the one that is challenging for us. When making risks we usually learn things and go through many experiences. If the risk wasn’t worth it we still tend to take something out of it. For example when it comes to our dreams and desires we risk a lot to make it happen. I say I am a lost generation. Just like the articles my mental health has been bad. Day by day the fear and stress has been bad. I do have dreams and desires but i feel like it won’t get fulfilled because of the stress. I feel like it will all be risky and everything will be under pressure.
Mirza: I agree with you when you talk about other generations commenting on ours. the generations always point out negatives of the generation after them. Being a part of the current generation many people have said that we are lazy, self absorbed and too attached to modern technology. Although some of the things that they say I agree with some are just not true.
After reading the first article, by Newsweek, I can say that I can understand how the people who were interviewed felt. Wanting to do what you dream of doing but needing a backup plan for it because the job you dream of having most likely won't be enough to support you when it comes to finance. The jobs I have dreamed of doing were too hard for me to just start off unstable like everyone else. I needed something less riskier but at the same time I would be able to enjoy it. And along with that definitely comes with stress and anxiety, needing to think about the future. One thing that stood out to me in the article was mental health. Although I already have a sense of the major discussions about mental health, I did not know that young adults "are carrying their anxiety into the workplace." (Piore 2019) I always thought that they had already been trained to feel a certain professional way that helps them with their working life, and that I would be next, and by a certain age then, I would be free of worries and anxiety. Another thing that stood out was student debt. I began hearing about this in 2017, rarely. But now, I hear it at least every other day. And it affects me because I also become anxious about my future when it comes to going to college. I don't know a thing about properly using money, nor how student debt works. Continuing to the second article, by the Los Angeles Times, the issue regarding Gen Z members dedicating their adolescence towards fixing what the elder generations have created is absolutely worth noting. I don't have a strong hatred towards adults, but 7 times out of the 10 times I come across one, they are usually an ass. They have this negative aura around them, and the obvious one, being rude. Unlike adults, it is said that "Gen Z’s members have repeatedly shown the rest of us their empathetic imaginations and their capacity for follow-through." (Warnke 2019) However, I know that most adults do not care about how the teens feel, they only determine their worth by looking at the surface of the general, not willing to understand them, not willing to care for their problems yet they pour a bucket of responsibilities on their head without reasoning as if the teens know what to do. Going a bit off topic but there should be no limit as to what you can like at what age, and that you should be allowed to like whatever you liked even if it was from since you were a kid. Adults are always babbling about how you're too old for toy cars, barbie dolls, watching cartoons, etc., leading us to "their" adult life, making it seem like a strict rule. On the bright side, there are more adults willing to understand and acknowledge the problems and issues surrounding Gen Z, and most importantly, care for them because they are not a fully grown adult yet.
I am most certainly a lost generation. Post WWI was a heavy turn for the generation during that time, and the influences of the people then are still present in today's society. It showed the cruelty of reality, which led to more negative attitudes towards life as the years go by. And because of it, people think their lives are always horrible and begin to chase for the meaning of happiness every second in their life because they don't ever stop viewing their life as depressing. However, the issue with it today is that we destroy own happy days. We refuse to acknowledge that we had had a share of happiness for a day because for a short period of time, we were upset by something else. The thing with being sad is that it overthrows happiness, and it is one of the worst things to ever exist. The lost generation is full of negative emotions and attitudes towards life that continue to be seen every day. And one person feeling sad would unconsciously spread their sadness to others, because it is an unsaid rule that there should be no happiness when there is sadness, it's either one way or the other.
I disagree with the point pointed out in the Los Angeles Times where the author Melissa Batchelor Warnke point out that “If ‘entitled’ is the most common adjective, fairly or not, applied to millennials, the catchwords for Generation Z are practical and cautious,”(Warnke, Los Angeles Times) I disagree with this point that Warnke points out how people of Generation Z are practical and cautious as I can only and mainly base it off on what I have seen so far but I disagree with how she uses the word cautious, as far as I can see not all but some people of GenZ are cautious but the other half of GenZ is not as cautious and they would just aim and head for things straight forward without many or much preparation. In Newsweek the author Adam Piore points out the fact that “Gen Zs know what an economic train wreck looks like. They were impressionable kids during the crash of 2008, when many of their parents lost their jobs or their life savings or both. They aren't interested in taking any chances.”(Piore, Newsweek) Piore points out that GenZ people knows what an economic train wreck looks like and that they don’t take chances but Generation Z people are born from 1995 to 2019 and in the economic crash of 2008 how many people of Generation Z actually know what it was like as some were still small and know nothing or remember anything from that time and about half of Generation Z never even experienced the economic crash of 2008 as they were born after 2008 and might only know about it through class, news, and maybe their parents. In the Los Angeles Times Warnke points out an interesting point where she says “How fortunate we are that members of Gen Z are devoting their adolescences to correcting our country’s painful course…”(Warnke, Los Angeles Times) This is an interesting point to me because she mentions how the people of Generation Z are devoting their adolescences to correcting the country’s painful course, by painful course if they mean by the United States of America’s history then I wouldn’t as much as to call it painful as it’s the same thing with all the other countries’ history and the point where Warnke talks about Generation Zs devoting their adolescences to correcting the countries’s wrong doings or mistakes, don’t make me laugh, as far as I can see people of this generation spends their time socializing and barely any even cares about fixing the country’s mistakes and all they do is to play and enjoy life through electronics and sports. From what the two articles’ definition of Generation Z then I wouldn’t say that I am a Generation Z but I do agree that we are a lost generation as things are much easier for us and there are much much more distractions in this generation and people just doesn’t think about their future as much anymore and would prefer to live in the moment.
I agree with Hao Lin that we are a lost generation for a part of the reason is things are much easier for us due to past generations such as the millennial Generation which makes us felt as parasites who may not contribute as much while continued consumption, , also as well as we have more distractions in this generation. But I disagree with the part where we don't worry about the future. For it's the opposite, well it depends on his or her's maturity but those who are 14 or 15 will felt wanted contribution for the guilt for not payed consumption to parents.
The term “Lost Generation” mean the generation of people who reached adulthood during or immediately following World War I. Based on this definition I would say that Gen Z is not the lost generation. Yes this generation is prone to have a lot of anxiety, but that is because of our circumstances. many people don't have many fortunes. they have to worry about school, work, paying rent etc. not only do Gen z's have to do this, but all generations do. In the Los Angeles Times, it states, "I’ve been reporting on Gen Z for years and those aren’t the young people I see. Many are anxious, as many Americans of all ages are anxious. (Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in the United States, and the percentage of its adults living with anxiety is growing year over year.)". In other words, our Anxiety have nothing to do with the definition of lost generation so I believe that Gen z is not lost generation. if the lost generation was based on anxiety, all generations would be the lost generations, even the generations before world war I.
I agree with you because we have to understand that we all are different. Diversity is a beautiful aspect of society that allows peoples to communicate and share ideas. However, I do believe that generalizing all Gen Z's is an idea that fails to prove a growing society and changing world. Anxiety and depression is part of life and human nature thus explains why mostly everyone is not able to deal with these situations. Generations share many things in common but the only difference is a two- three digit number
There is no doubt that Generation Z is different. Generation Z is exceptionally open and diverse; however, surprisingly, this new generation has brought along many issues that concern those members of previous generations. Nonetheless, they do not fail to surprise the world with valuable and eye opening contributions that reflect on the many aspects of a changing civilization. In “Gen Zs are Anxious, Entrepreneurial and Determined to Avoid Their Predecessor's Mistakes”, there is one instance that depicts Generation Z as a chronically and drastically depressed generation, in reality, there are many teenagers and young adults that are encountering harsh situations, but it’s not to generalize that all teenagers from the Generation Z are depressed. Many are hard workers, and others are free spirits with a sense of independence, which it’s probably because they are witnesses to old fashioned beliefs and the consequences of such ideologies. One interesting detail that was mentioned was the fact that the debt for college is 1.5 Trillion dollars, a surprising and definitely frightening number. In “The emerging media narrative on Gen Z is very, very wrong”, it’s fascinating to see lace that intertwines to a certain degree member of different generations, indeed its radical view on Boomers it’s supported by probably a majority, but I think it’s important to understand that they were raised with different values, yet, they can contribute to the learning of young people. Because the United States is a diverse place, many of the Gen Z and Boomers did not have the same experience, they were born and raised in a foreign country. Generalizing their point of view is lack of understanding of a changing society and diverse world.
I agree that Gen Z is different, really different but in a good way. The pervious generation thinks we're a problem and has lots of issues. But that's so wrong, they fail to notice how we're changing the world as we speak. We are very hard working people, the pervious generation always say that we're always on our phones and computers not studying etc. They fail to see that we're working our buts off to be successful.
I agree with your idea of gen-z being different therefore being like no other generation. In addition I liked the way you stated the goal for gen-z is to solve issues that previous generations have failed to fix, climate change, war etc. I also agree with it being wrong to group an entire generation and call them depressed and lazy. Sure there’s lazy and depressed people in the world but calling a group of people you don’t even know lazy and depressed is the easy way out of not actually addressing the issue that is understanding gen-z is different. The world is changing and using old solutions for new problems isint always the answer.
I agree with you Francis. Gen z is quite different and unique in our own ways. Gen z isn’t like any other generation. I get that we are all different. So as you said the previous generations grew up/ raised different I totally agree with that. Also day by day the world and people are changing.
Like all the responses stated above, your response was well stated, I agree with the statement "Nonetheless, they do not fail to surprise the world with valuable and eye opening contributions that reflect on the many aspects of a changing civilization." Our contributions to the society we live in, literally shock the older crowd, we Gen Z'ers are loud with our opinions and stand up when the government or a group of people is at a wrong. Our memes also spark a global response, we never fail to make a dire/dark situation into a comical one (with restrictions of course) well stated though!
I agree because just because gen z is different doesn't define us as lost. times evolve, and people evolve. This generation, and many other generations have their similarities, so if we are going y that definition everyone even before WW1 would be apart of the lost generation .
Francis: I agree with you when you mention the US mentioning the generational gaps. Each generation has unique ideas and beliefs and they each criticize each other based on these points. It’s all because we all grew up differently.
I believe the contrary because I believe that the Gen Z generation is a lost generation. Our past generations had experiences in which we could never know of because we never lied in their shoes. We often think we are stable enough but that is only thanks to our pat generations. Without them we would be even more lost.
I have heard from many individuals as well as from my family members that our generation , Gen Z, is indeed a lost generation. I grew up surrounded by cousins that are my age and born either in the same year or one above or below. I also have cousins who are from the millennial generation. I find that when having family discussions about the different generations and the problems that are facing society as a whole and how each of the respectable generations face choose to face these challenges, the generations always point out negatives of the generation after them. Being a part of the current generation many people have said that we are lazy, self absorbed and too attached to modern technology. Although some of the things that they say I agree with some are just not true. Yes we may be different from them in terms that when they were growing up they were playing outside and being creative with the little that they had and when I was a growing up I was right on the cusp of when technology just started to become the big thing. Despite this, I do relate to some of the things that the millennial generation holds dear to their hearts such as the importance of human contact and being present in conversation and limiting technology. I do believe that this generation is falling into a deep hole where we will soon not be able to socialize with people face-to-face due to our attachment to modern technology. In Adam Piore's article about the current generation, he discusses many of the viewpoints and stereotypes associated with the generation. However, he makes a strong point that I believe is connected and resonates with our generation."We need to respect these kids because they are dealing with bigger concerns than we have appreciated, … They are growing up in a different environment. They are really well aware of climate change. They are dealing with threats of gun violence that are very real. And the pace of change is like nothing we have experienced." (Adam Piore). I do believe that as a generation we do need to earn the respect of the previous generations before us because we are trying our hardest to deal with the mess that we have been placed in. I think it is very important to understand the fact that we were born into this generation with all these problems. We are taking on the responsibility of dealing with the current climate change epidemic as well as with gun violence due to the laws not restricting things of that sort. It is also important to note that at this young age we don't really have a say in the laws and in politics until our voice can be heard with votes. As a result of this many teenagers and members of Gen Z are scared and have almost in a sense given up on making improvements to the world around us due to the lack of support from the generations that came before us that but us into this situation….
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree with Generation Z isn't a lost generation.
DeleteI agree both and disagree of you.
Delete"Generation Z isn’t a lost generation, this is due to the fact that connecting with people around the world is done quicker, diversity is all around us, distinct values are what makes everyone unique, and we take the pessimistic thoughts and events and turn it into a funny meme" -- I LOVE THIS!
DeleteGeneration Z is a lost generation because many people experience anxiety and fear of the unknown, which has led to the loss of people’s true values and dreams.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Generation Z is suffering the most from mental health like 91 percent of young adults said they had felt physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress, such as depression or anxiety"(Adam Piore).
ReplyDeleteI feel like a lost generation personally because I have lost a sense of my culture/traditions of where my family came from because of my family came to make ends meet to live.

DeleteI strongly agree both of you.
DeleteAfter reading the following articles, I agreed and disagreed with a lot of the claims made in them.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading both articles, both authors made really good points about how Gen Z are a lost generation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, saying we're a lost generation.

Greenberg). Not doing the research before doing things is clearly the "lost generation."
ReplyDeleteI agree with "91 percent of young adults said they had felt physical or emotional symptoms associated with stress, such as depression or anxiety," (Gen Zs are Anxious, Entrepreneurial and Determined to Avoid Their Predecessor's Mistakes).

ReplyDeleteI agree with a lot of points in both articles and I think they were relevant ones too.
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that we are a lost generation.
DeleteI believe that Gen z is a lost generation because of how how much stress we have now and anxiety.
ReplyDeleteI very much agree with the arguments you've made.
Delete-Emma Jumpelt
I disagree on the statement that we are a lost generation because of stress and anxiety It's more like how we deal with that stress and anxiety that makes us a lost generation. But I do agree with what you're saying about the limitations in our newer society and how it affects our outlook on life. And the disconnection with parents and living life for different reasons. Social media is an interesting part in how we are a lost generation. It's different than Fitzgerald's generation where they used media to critique and bring attention to the flaws of their society. We use social media as a way to distract us from the reality and make ourselves numb to avoid having to take responsibility.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the point that students have rising debt and leave college with debt.
ReplyDeleteI see your point. I think our generation does worry too much because of the pressure that's put on us. We are the future and we have a lot of responsibility.
DeleteGen Z isn't a lost generation. I agree with the article Gen Zs are Anxious, Entrepreneurial and Determined to Avoid Their Predecessor's Mistakes
ReplyDeleteby Adam Piore.
DeleteGen Z is a lost generation in the sense that everyone is less connected to the world around them but we’re also more expressive and able to tell others about our emotions better than previous generations. Also, more social concepts are excepted which would make us more rebellious and “lost” in the eyes of millennials and boomers. There’s definitely many differences in how we were raised in comparison to other generations but we’re not lost unless you think about our reliance on technology
ReplyDeleteI disagree as even though we use our technology in an over reliant manner there is also a way for people that struggle with outside personal connections to use technology to benefit them. Technology is our future and I think that more changes are going to come through technology as we learn and understand the inner workings better. We are twice as much because were connected as technology has enabled us to talk to people from across states and countries by certain apps and we can talk to people to help us with our emotions and problems we face in everyday life.
DeleteI disagree with the statement that we are a lost generation and also that everyone is less connected with the world.
DeleteI disagree that Gen Z is a lost generation because if we were less connected with the world how can we be more expressive.

ReplyDeleteRegarding the first article, I think people who are part of gen-z aren’t only risk averse because of an unpredictable economy but also because of feeling there isn’t a chance for them.

DeleteIt's extremely upsetting to know that people always generalize their statements once they come in contact with a few similar cases.
DeleteI liked how you explained your point with: “It would be like calling someone who thinks differently but still gets the right answer, lost because they think differently.” Just because we don’t share the same perspective as the previous generations doesn’t mean they are any less wise or right. We aren’t a lost generation because we will all have to inevitably fix the mistakes our predecessors failed to overcome. We have become more assertive with the changes we want to see and are willing to stick up for ourselves and others.
DeleteI do not consider Gen Z to be a lost generation.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, great job in stating your opinion, I agree with the statement "we are the most driven/goal-oriented generation, with fighting for what we believe in and expressing how, to better ourselves." This is very true, we live in times of desperate need to better out society, and our government.
DeleteI agree that we probably are the most goal-oriented generations because many of us have established our own values and we have painted the road for what we want our future to be.
DeleteOur generation isn't a lost generation as we continue to progress and we try to become better by improving ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that we continue to progress and try to become better but as pressure grows on us to take on responsible rolls to better society it could be a lot to take in as the past generation looks and judges us with the privilege we have been given being born in this era. As depression grows and people not voting because rarely no one cares about politics anymore and the mainstream media always points the finger at us and keep blaming can discourage one living in this generation.
DeleteI want to say that I agree with your point that you made about our generation.
DeleteBoth articles had made some good points on our current generation, gen Z.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you explained your own situation in this, but I do disagree with your point.
DeleteI believe that the Gen Z generation is a lost generation.
ReplyDelete“How fortunate we are that members of Gen Z are devoting their adolescences to correcting our country’s painful course, the conditions of which elder generations created or enabled by our inaction.”(Warnke)Even though we as a general have a different mindset from others we still contain that devotion of if continuing on with our lives.
DeleteStephani I agree with the part where you said how Gen Z grew up with technology and basically our number one priority.
DeleteGen Z is anyone born from 1995 to 2015 according to kasasa.com.
ReplyDeleteI would say that generation Z isn’t a lost generation.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading both of the articles I came to the conclusion that Gen z is a lost generation.
ReplyDeleteMirza: I agree with you when you talk about other generations commenting on ours. the generations always point out negatives of the generation after them. Being a part of the current generation many people have said that we are lazy, self absorbed and too attached to modern technology. Although some of the things that they say I agree with some are just not true.
DeleteAfter reading the first article, by Newsweek, I can say that I can understand how the people who were interviewed felt.
ReplyDeleteI am most certainly a lost generation.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Hao Lin that we are a lost generation for a part of the reason is things are much easier for us due to past generations such as the millennial Generation which makes us felt as parasites who may not contribute as much while continued consumption, , also as well as we have more distractions in this generation. But I disagree with the part where we don't worry about the future. For it's the opposite, well it depends on his or her's maturity but those who are 14 or 15 will felt wanted contribution for the guilt for not payed consumption to parents.
DeleteThe term “Lost Generation” mean the generation of people who reached adulthood during or immediately following World War I.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you because we have to understand that we all are different.
DeleteThere is no doubt that Generation Z is different.
ReplyDeleteI agree that Gen Z is different, really different but in a good way. The pervious generation thinks we're a problem and has lots of issues. But that's so wrong, they fail to notice how we're changing the world as we speak. We are very hard working people, the pervious generation always say that we're always on our phones and computers not studying etc. They fail to see that we're working our buts off to be successful.
DeleteI agree with your idea of gen-z being different therefore being like no other generation.
DeleteI agree with you Francis. Gen z is quite different and unique in our own ways. Gen z isn’t like any other generation. I get that we are all different. So as you said the previous generations grew up/ raised different I totally agree with that. Also day by day the world and people are changing.
DeleteLike all the responses stated above, your response was well stated, I agree with the statement "Nonetheless, they do not fail to surprise the world with valuable and eye opening contributions that reflect on the many aspects of a changing civilization." Our contributions to the society we live in, literally shock the older crowd, we Gen Z'ers are loud with our opinions and stand up when the government or a group of people is at a wrong. Our memes also spark a global response, we never fail to make a dire/dark situation into a comical one (with restrictions of course) well stated though!
DeleteI agree because just because gen z is different doesn't define us as lost. times evolve, and people evolve. This generation, and many other generations have their similarities, so if we are going y that definition everyone even before WW1 would be apart of the lost generation .
DeleteFrancis: I agree with you when you mention the US mentioning the generational gaps. Each generation has unique ideas and beliefs and they each criticize each other based on these points. It’s all because we all grew up differently.
DeleteI believe the contrary because I believe that the Gen Z generation is a lost generation. Our past generations had experiences in which we could never know of because we never lied in their shoes. We often think we are stable enough but that is only thanks to our pat generations. Without them we would be even more lost.

ReplyDeleteI have heard from many individuals as well as from my family members that our generation , Gen Z, is indeed a lost generation.
ReplyDeleteWe are taking on the responsibility of dealing with the current climate change epidemic as well as with gun violence due to the laws not restricting things of that sort.
