"The American Dream" is a phase coined by american writer James Truslow Adams In his work "The Epic of America " and straight from the house's mouth it is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, the opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position." My Definition of the american dream is the same as the originator's for I agree to him. The reason that I agrees with his definition is due to america is known as the role model for nations in democracy. And democracy is where every one had rights that others can's take away, also every one have a say in the government and have opportunities for changes and development not effected by class oppression. Thus that American dream of his depiction follows the standard of democracy where every who deserve to be known for their ability to contribute for better society and have enthusiasm able to climb up the ladder for better, and not rejected from opportunities based on unfair usage of current wealth status, family background, and racial along with appearance differences.

I agree with you on the American dream of James Truslow depiction follows the standard of democracy. Democracy allows people to be able to vote representatives into power, this constrains the power of the executive, furthermore democracy admits equality among persons that all can share allegiance to even when they disagree on subjects such as substantive law or policy.
The American dream is the belief that anyone, no matter where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in an American Society. We see the American dream all the time. Weather you are watching a movie, reading it through the pages of a book, or you’ve experienced it personally. We strive for a better future through hard work and perseverance.
In my opinion, I agree with this definition. I believe that we all experience the definition of the American dream. For example, As students we experience our own version. We strive for success, we study for the exams, and we hope to graduate and achieve an even bigger dream. People don't have to be rich, and live in a grand mansion to achieve the American dream, for everyone has their own definition of what success is.
I totally agree with you because similarly I believe that the American Dream does not necessarily means to strive for the best but rather to become the successful person you envisioned yourself to be. I think that this idea captivates the mind of those who are not represented or are being harm in some wat. I think it's the motivation that helps people fight through the journey of life and rather teaches a life lesson than the desire to be the best of the best.
Darline I totally agree with the idea that the American Dream includes everyone that is looking for a better life. The American dream does not need a classification. You do not need to be of a certain race, gender, sex, and anything else that makes people look diffrent. When you chase the American Dream you just a person looking for prosperity and the idea of bettering your family and creating a big family that will never look back at what they come from.

"The American Dream" by numerous amounts of definitions is that anyone in America can achieve success regardless of race or social class through hard work, risk-taking, and sacrifice. Everyone starts off as equal, and has a ton of new opportunities, but one would need to work hard in order to grab one's success. Some see it as the most valid way to pursue happiness because they need to feel as if they earned it, and that it is righteous to claim happiness after going through hardships to reach for success rather than being successful from doing nothing. But "The American Dream" seems surreal when seen in a broader perspective. Race and gender are two of the many issues in America for years. It can be said that "The American Dream" is just a sign of hope for anyone who doesn't feel successful in life. And it is. The term "The American Dream" was originated from James Truslow Adams, and was said by The Atlantic that "it had more to do with idealism than material prosperity." Achieving a successful life seems bizarre to many because it seems impossible for he/she to reach their wanted success when he/she is at the bottom. And that's where "The American Dream" comes into place. It creates a sense of hope, leading people to believe that they are able to reach it with all the opportunities they have in front of them. But they'd have to use those opportunities to reach towards their wanted success.
My American Dream is similar to the general definition. It is to enable one, regardless of their identity, to have access to tons of opportunities to achieve success through hard work, risk-taking, and sacrifice. Being in America with all the given opportunities available for almost everyone, one is most likely able to be successful. Everyone knows that in order to get something they want, they have to act. The greater the "something" is, the harder the "act" is going to be. This definition of mine generally implies to the people who are struggling and want a new change. Those who weren't given as many opportunities as before. I view "The American Dream" as an example of one of the ways a person can achieve success with a sprinkle of hope added in it as a motivator.

I agree with your meaning of the American dream. In order to accomplish your american dream you must work hard for it. It doesn't matter where you come from, your race, identity, etc, all that matters is your morals and dedication you have towards becoming successful. Everyone has different goals they want to achieve. Some may be easier to complete than others, but the main key is dedication. There are definitely risks, hard work, and decisions you must make along the way. Just remember to do whats best for you and not for others.
The American Dream- is the idea or belief that you will prosper and your overall well being will improve coming to America. The belief started with the idea of being free and having certain rights that were not offered in the country. This led to many immigrants coming to America to build a better life to improve their life in many aspects. The American dream translated to success, when you come to America or even live here and chase the American dream, you will be better space then when you started My American Dream is having that college experience and gaining a degree to where I can create my own business making at least 6 figures. Having that traditional college experience and then pursuing a career in the field will be a dream come true. Everything will work out as planned because everyone strives for the education and the fancy career in America. The main point and goal of my American Dream is to help my family in their struggles and elevate their status. I want to make sure they are all financially stable and living in good neighborhood.

I agree with your perspective on the American dream, Lamont. I agree with the fact that having an American dream includes with having an education and gaining a job that you love and being successful in it. Coming to America we all have a dream in pursuing a career that we love and that will help us become rich and will help us meet our needs and wants. I think that we should use America as an opportunity to better ourselves and to better our families because we have so many options and opportunities available to us. I agree with your definition of an American dream. anyone can achieve the ultimate American dream if they just put their mind to it. Its a goal that is very hard, but very rewarding. Your American dream is something I feel like many people can relate to. A lot of people dream of the day they can walk down the aisle and get a degree. I see this dream play out especially for minorities because they want the best for their family. this is the perfect example of the American Dream.

This was very interesting to read and I absolutely love this. I've been inspired by your definition of the American Dream and looking towards a brighter future. I agree with Michelle on the idea that the American Dream had been in existence before the immigrants and achieving it would need sacrifices in comfort. Where it people would try to go and explore for land unoccupied for farming, and freedom of religion, etc. Trying to do so would require sacrifices of time and energy evening risking of starvation and infected by diseases, etc. And Michelle's personal interpretation of the American Dream is also agree upon me because i mentioned " where every who deserve to be known for their ability to contribute for better society and have enthusiasm able to climb up the ladder for better..." so in order to be the deserved one must earn it by facing discomfort and sacrifice comfort. Even throughout our history, countless Americans have risen from rags to riches and success. Because of the rising economy, people believe that success is possible in America for everyone, and yes this is the case. One could come here for the opportunities. With the American Dream, it’s an opportunity to achieve that dream job and lifestyle. Even escaping oppression, the American Dream is about freedom and equality Through hard work and perseverance, anyone can achieve anything. The American Dream is even seen throughout television shows, movies, and even the books we read. Everyone’s dream is different, but every dream has a purpose.
My American Dream is to get accepted into an amazing college, get into the medical field, earning my degrees, my PhD, and become an official Cardiologist. The goal is to be financially secure and not worry about money, Buying a penthouse in the Upper East Side is but a dream I’m striving to obtain. Having several sources of income that would care for my children and partner would be phenomenal. Taking care of my parents is also the main objective. I picture myself sipping a glass of wine, and smiling at my reflection from the penthouse window view, reminiscing all those hours spent on homework, and studying, then saying “Mommy, I did it, just like I promise you all those years ago, I’m here, I’m finally here.”
I strongly agree with your definition of the American Dream. I love how you explain that it is when people try to achieve freedom and to get away from oppression. The American Dream is not always about becoming a wealthy individual, but to be able to be in a society where freedom, equality, and social mobility is possible. That would be the first step in order to achieve anyone's dream. Even though the word dreams makes people believe that it is an idea that is not essentially realistic, it can become a reality once you set your mind to it and try your hardest to successfully reach your American Dream. Your American Dream seems like the modern version of people’s American Dreams in the twentieth century. Freedom and equality is still a huge dream that people have in other parts of the world, which causes them to try their hardest to travel to America as well as to other nations around the world. There are many refugees throughout the world who are seeking for an asylum. America is known to be the nation to take in people who seek out to live their American Dream of finally being free. I believe that your dream seems more like it is on the economic side as well as leans more towards your aspiration, which is what I believe most American Dreams of actual people who are born in America have become compared to decades ago. I agree with what you think the American Dream is and love what you want to achieve. I agree with no matter what race you are or religon the United States give people a chance to achieve what they want. But at the same time I don't agree because those are false words of hope in my eyes. It's hard to make it to the top like the American dream is because there will always be so many competitors and you have to be willing to take a lot of risk which isn't something a lot of people would do. The American Dream, is the ultimate goal of an American. To live in the promised land with opportunities and happiness; a better life. The dictionary definition is “the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved.” The American Dream is being able to achieve your goals and live the life of prosperity. My American Dream probably isn’t very spectacular. I don’t think it’s possible to have a big american dream anymore. The standards of living happily is just the bare minimum now. I just want to be able to survive, to have enough to keep on living happily. I want to be financially stable, I don’t want to be a millionaire or even make like half a million annually. Although it would be nice, I would be happy to be above the poverty line. I want to be able to maybe go travel once a year and work a job that makes me happy, not one that makes me more money. A lot of things included in my American Dream isn’t for me only necessarily, I want equality for every single person no matter the gender, race, class, religion, sexuality, etc. I want our planet to not be on the brink of death. I want everyone living the life they want not only myself. I don’t want to have burdens. My American Dream is for everyone to be happy no matter who they are. I also want universal healthcare.

However, I believe that the American Dream of each person is a bit different because the standards of living for each person is different and has changed from the standards of living of people in the previous decades. Even though the American Dream is to achieve your goals and to live a better life that is filled with opportunities, each person’s goals are a bit different. A person who lives in America may have a different dream than a person who is trying to travel to America to seek asylum. A person who lives in America may dream for something bigger like graduating from a great university and starting their own successful company, while a refugee may just simply hope to travel to America to have a new and better life. The American Dream is that no matter what race you are, ranking of class, and where you came from, if you work and study hard then you will have a good life and earn a lot of money. You must take the opportunities given to you and if you risk it you can live a better life. I personally think this is fake and I only to get people motivated to keep on going because only 1 to 10 percent of people change from the class they were born in like middle class or lower class. Everyone believes they can be successful like Bill Gates but that is really rare so I don't believe that the American Dream can be true for everyone.

For me, American dream is no matter what social class a person was born, they could move into a higher social class if they work hard in their life time. For me, my American dream is to buy my dream car. Cars in America are much cheaper than the cars in China, so achieve my American Dream will be much easier in America than in China. Also another American Dream for me is to get into a top college. Colleges in America is also much better than colleges in China, and living in America will gave a higher chance to get into top college.

To the founding fathers the American dream could not thrive if it were not hindered by “taxation without representation.” Kings, rulers, and tyrants shouldn’t decide taxes and other laws, the people should have the right to elect officials to represent them. In the American dream people have democracy.

To my own personal knowledge the "American Dream" is a term used my immigrants migrating to America seeking asylum from countries that are war torn, under a dictatorship or tyrant, or other things that violates their basic human rights. This term to these people can mean something as simply as religious freedom or freedom in general. It can also mean having better opportunities to make more money and support and protect their families. Additionally in general the American Dream is defined as allowing your greatest dreams and aspirations coming true and being a success.
For me personally I do not have an American Dream. I know the harsh reality of America, the inequality, the racism, the sexism and much more for me to success not only because I am a woman but black. America makes it extremely difficult for anyone who is not a white man to succeed and make something of themselves. I'm not saying anyone of color or different gender or even sexuality should give up and nit try to make something of themselves and change the world. I am saying that the American Dream is an empty term for me. My basic dream and goal for my life is a be successful or smart enough to be financially stable and not to have money problems and worries they way everyone else around me does as they grow older.
I agree with the harsh reality because the American Dream is dead. The dream now is just survival and the bare minimum. Living in America isn't easy for anyone that isn't a straight white man. In the same way, I don't have an American Dream either, I just want to live freely.
I think that even though there are lots of problems in America, you girls still have many opportunities here that you would not have in other places. All over the world people of color and women don't have the chance to go to school or college. This is a very sad fact, but I don't know a single country where racism does not dominate social structures. At least here you can speak your voice and fight for social justice! This is why I work at a public school and want to be your teacher: I know it is possible for you to change your life and achieve your goals. I have many students of color who go to college for free and are achieving their goals and dreams (working in finance, going to Barnard, Howard, becoming a teacher). Of course life is easier for white men, but even though your life is not easy, because you are so smart, it is possible!
The definition when you look up the American dream is "the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved." I don't thin that this is true. Not everybody has the same opportunities and not everybody is treated the same way. Many people judge by color, race or ethnicity. By law this isn't allowed so many people might think that we've achieved the American dream, but there are still biased people who pick and choose based off of these factors. My American dream has a lot to do with equality. I want women and men to be treated equally, I also want all races and religions to be treated equally. One big reason why I want to become a lawyer is because I want to make the legal system better. The US legal system is all types of messed up. I want to help innocent people from going to jail, I want every client to be treated equally by the judges and jury in the court. There are many different ways you can define the American dream, this is my very own American dream.
American legal system does have bug, but it is already very fair, very good because, in some other countries, people don't even have the right to speak up for their rights. But here, people can even be won when they suing big companies. Hope your dream comes true.

The American dream is for someone to have everything they ever wanted and to be able to provide for themselves and their family without holding anything back. The American dream is when someone doesn't have to struggle on how they are going to eat or pay the rent. My American dream is a day when everyone can come together and be in peace i would like to not have to struggle financially. i would love if when i die everyone knows my name i want to become a legend. i want to be in one of the best law schools become a great lawyer and serve justice. i would like to be a role model to many young girls and i want everyone to remember me as the vibrant lady that brought a change to the world and gave fair judgement.

The “American Dream” is really the most captivating thing to outsiders looking in to our country. Everyone had their own individual dreams and America is the place in which to seams become a reality. In my eyes, the term the American Dream refers to one who has come from nothing with the intentions of being something. For those who are living outside of the states, America has all the necessary tools in order to build them up to be their best selves. They look at us as the highest of the high and they see our ambition and our hard work ethic, everyone wants a taste of success and the American Dream is an individual's chance of tasting success. Some believe the ultimate goal is to become wealthy and to be drowning in money and luxuries but I don't believe that’s the true meaning of this phrase. Sure money is nice and helpful but one who chases after money and this “luxurious” lifestyle will find out that it can quickly turn into a nightmare. Money is not everything but Americans are stuck in this mindset of wealth being the world. When we really think about it, the times and trends are constantly changing, once we get the latest shoes or purse, something better or more flashy has been created. Americans have this tendency of wanting to have the greatest but when we begin to chase material objects that’s when we lose the American mindset. To me, the American Dream is different to everyone but at its core it the desire to be at a place in which we can be comfortable, content and happy. These are the three ideals that a “true American” dreams of obtaining. Wealth and luxury will be before your eyes one second and it will disappear the next so chasing something other than money would be a wise move. Searching and working towards a personal happiness is the essence of the American Dream.
I like the point you make about how being an American means working towards your personal happiness. We are driven by our own individual desires and in this country it’s okay to dream big. The United States is a different world. "America" is defined by the hopes of the people that want to strive and become a better version of themselves. America has been built by this ideological system of striving for the better as means of realizing dreams channeled by hope. In other words, the "American Dream" is the metamorphosis of a vulnerable being to a fully independent and developed person. As a immigrant, I see these differences and I believe that is what makes this country a better place to live in. America has presented me with a lot of opportunities to learn and participate, I feel a fond connection to this country that, although politically and socially the US it's not the best place to live in, it's definitely a land of opportunities; where working hard and being persisten will get you anywhere. Many people give up so easily because they cannot accept failure, they are very pessimistic and give up, or either are too lazy and won't do it just because. These people are the ones that lack the sense of urgency and are single-minded who's conformity are the anchor to progress for themselves and society--like stuck in limbo without even knowing what it is . Some people who were not born here have the urgency to seek for a future and appreciate the luck and support they have. The "American Dream" states the differences between desire, want and need because it is the ideal that embraces all races, genders, and cultures that rather than being another aspect of society, it is the motivation of people in foreign land to create their own future, create their new persona and embrace their destiny. This ideal refers to the fighters of life, the ones that are alien to the true American culture.
I agree how you said “America” is defined by the hopes of the people that want to become a better version of themselves. That is true because everyday people are making goals and accomplishing them in order to make them unique in the world. The desire for people to be successful is very high. People just want to be the best and they work their hardest in order to accomplish that. This is why life is hard, when people set high goals for them, sometimes they have to got pass their limits which sometimes is very hard to do. I agree because it's like a risk, you are left with two choices: giving up everything (the place you were born in, family or etc or staying there that will make you full of regrets). I think if you move to the U.S., you shouldn't listen to the "American Dream" that makes people think they are failures and made the wrong choice but instead, live their lives with joy and stop thinking about competiting when they know it's pointless.
I disagree with you that "although politically the US it's not the best place to live in" because no matter how many people dislike Trump, the U.S is still the number 1 powerful country in this planet, no doubt.
The “American dream” is defined as the belief that anyone, no matter where they were born or what class they were born into, can attain their own version of success in a society where upward mobility is possible for everyone. The American Dream is achieved through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work, rather than by chance.Its the dream that you become successful from your hard work and dedication not by having money handed to you. When the society hears the American dream we all have different perspectives towards it. Some can be bad some can be good. The phrase American dream in my opinion means no matter what race, what background, how you look, where you come from, you should get the same advantage/ opportunity as everyone else. Someone should not get something from their background and race. Meaning no one shouldn’t assume things. Everyone should get fair treatment. Like let’s say gender wise a male and female wants a job. The American dream is something that people say all around the world, this was because people thought or thinks that Americans have all these opportunities in live that others don't. I like the idea of the American dream is dependent on the person, I've never thought of it that way. The American Dream is to make money and live a life that you are content with according to many sources. But to me an American Dream is the appreciation of differences. Living the American Dream is living a life that is so different from the rest of the world. Being able to experience other cultures, languages, religions. I think our differences is what makes America. I think living the American Dream is to be happy and united with everyone disregarding all differences. America is the capital of influence so this also plays a role in making the American Dream. We are what makes the world. The American Dream is living a life where you are guiding each other together happily and freely. There aren’t many other countries where that dream comes true. Definitely not where my parents are from. That’s why they came here. In third world countries you have to worry about corruption in literally everything. In third world countries you have to worry about which leader will cause what war, which group will cause what riot, and etc. The American Dream is an escape from that.

To me “The American Dream” is everyone being treated equally no matter what race, gender, religion, ethnicity they come from and we're all thriving to reach our goals to become successful. I totally agree with you Mimi. The American dream should be to anyone and everyone. No matter the race, color, background you come from. Plus in the end of the day we’re all trying to succeed at something no matter how big or small the goal is. Also we all have different point of to everything so the definition of American dream would be different to all of us. We might view it as something negative or positive. To me the meaning of the term American dream really only means one thing, the idea that you can doing anything if you put your mind to it. The American Dream is the ideal life most people strive for when they immigrated to America. One of the biggest aspects of the American Dream is you’re able to become something even if you have nothing through hard work and dedication. America loves success stories about how individuals go from rags to riches because it gives everyone hope- hope that one day we can achieve the same thing. There is a common belief that there is so much opportunity here in America, there has to be a place here where you can prosper and succeed. Regardless of what class you are born into, there is social mobility for you as long as you are willing to work hard and make sacrifices along the way. Hard work doesn’t guarantee success because some of the hardest working people still have absolutely nothing compared to a millionaire who inherited all their money. Regardless, you are on the path of eventually getting what you’re going after if you continue to work for it. My American Dream revolves around not being stressed and just living life without the pressure of everyone watching everything I do. I don’t need to live a perfect life working a good job, having two kids, living in a beautifully decorated home with plenty of money. Everything I listed would be nice but those things aren’t my end goal. I don't fully know what I want. I'm just blindly moving forward until I find something that speaks to me. Many people’s American Dream revolves around money because that is just something you need but I won’t find happiness if I only focus on the wealth aspect of my life. I think I’m so willing to settle on just basic necessities because I know I don’t have the drive or ambition as some others do to become big.

I totally relate to your “American Dream” Joanna, being stress free is my personal goal. Living a life free of stress and worries is the ideal dream. I agree with your point that America is the land of opportunities. I think that everyone wants to take advantage of what America has to offer and make it into something that they can thrive from. Everyone can gain something new and benefit themselves with hard work and sacrifice. This is what an ideal American strives to achieve and for every ideal American, there is a living American Dream.
In my opinion the American dream is coming to America and making your dreams come true. When you come to America there's opportunities to have a better life. You just have to try hard enough and be determined to get there. There's examples of immigrants who came from a poor background, traveled to America and became successful. One example is co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin, came from Moscow, Russia when it was still part of the Soviet Union, and immigrated to the U.S with his family when he was six years old. He met Larry Page and eventually dropped out to start working on Google. Today, he's now worth of 56.6 billion dollars. My American dream is to grow up and have a great paying job that I enjoy doing. Along with that, be financially stable so I won't have to rely on anything or anyone to live my life.

My American Dream is to have a high school diploma, complete a bachelor's degree, graduate from medical school and later become a dermatologist. The American Dream is something every American believes in and has been interpreted in various ways. The American dream to me is succeeding at something that everyone wants to achieve in life. No matter your background or where you come from. Almost everyone wants a nice house, a car, a husband or wife, a few kids and maybe a household pet but this version of the ‘American Dream’ may vary. Some people want a completely different version. My American Dream however is a little different. I do wish to achieve in life but I want to achieve something above and beyond. I want to become someone known. Maybe even put down in history. The reason that I agrees with his definition is due to america is known as the role model for nations in democracy. And democracy is where every one had rights that others can's take away, also every one have a say in the government and have opportunities for changes and development not effected by class oppression. Thus that American dream of his depiction follows the standard of democracy where every who deserve to be known for their ability to contribute for better society and have enthusiasm able to climb up the ladder for better, and not rejected from opportunities based on unfair usage of current wealth status, family background, and racial along with appearance differences.

We strive for success, we study for the exams, and we hope to graduate and achieve an even bigger dream. People don't have to be rich, and live in a grand mansion to achieve the American dream, for everyone has their own definition of what success is.

It is to enable one, regardless of their identity, to have access to tons of opportunities to achieve success through hard work, risk-taking, and sacrifice. Being in America with all the given opportunities available for almost everyone, one is most likely able to be successful. Everyone knows that in order to get something they want, they have to act. The greater the "something" is, the harder the "act" is going to be. This definition of mine generally implies to the people who are struggling and want a new change. Those who weren't given as many opportunities as before. I view "The American Dream" as an example of one of the ways a person can achieve success with a sprinkle of hope added in it as a motivator.

DeleteI agree with your meaning of the American dream. In order to accomplish your american dream you must work hard for it. It doesn't matter where you come from, your race, identity, etc, all that matters is your morals and dedication you have towards becoming successful. Everyone has different goals they want to achieve. Some may be easier to complete than others, but the main key is dedication. There are definitely risks, hard work, and decisions you must make along the way. Just remember to do whats best for you and not for others.

Having that traditional college experience and then pursuing a career in the field will be a dream come true. Everything will work out as planned because everyone strives for the education and the fancy career in America. The main point and goal of my American Dream is to help my family in their struggles and elevate their status. I want to make sure they are all financially stable and living in good neighborhood.
I agree with your definition of the "American Dream" because it is a multistep process for achieving goals and ensuring on the happiness of other, it is the support of loved ones and the lesson for becoming a successful person. America has been built by the hopes and dreams of the people and I believe that this ideal it's the motivation to strive for the better but not only on one's self but rather in benefit of others, the ones we love.

I agree with the fact that having an American dream includes with having an education and gaining a job that you love and being successful in it. Coming to America we all have a dream in pursuing a career that we love and that will help us become rich and will help us meet our needs and wants. I think that we should use America as an opportunity to better ourselves and to better our families because we have so many options and opportunities available to us. The American Dream is the idea of people wanting to have a better life. It is when people want to achieve success and greatness by trying to find opportunities in order to live their American Dream. The dream is achievable when social mobility is possible in society. People who want to live their American Dream have to take risks and make sacrifices. Being able to live your American Dream may seem difficult or nearly impossible at times. However, your dedication and the sacrifices that you are willing to take will show you that in order to be able to achieve your American Dream, you have to take risks and take on challenges even if they may seem difficult. You have to persevere, try your hardest, maybe even lose sleep, and dedicate your “free” time towards your goals. The "I do not want to worry about trying to compile some money in order to just be able to pay the rent and just eat. I want to be able to use the money to help further grow myself and to provide my family and others with the greatest opportunities." really spoke to me because I would always want to be able to help others but then I realize that I don't have the power to do so and that I'm also failing on helping myself. DeleteI agree with Michelle on the idea that the American Dream had been in existence before the immigrants and achieving it would need sacrifices in comfort. Where it people would try to go and explore for land unoccupied for farming, and freedom of religion, etc. Trying to do so would require sacrifices of time and energy evening risking of starvation and infected by diseases, etc. And Michelle's personal interpretation of the American Dream is also agree upon me because i mentioned " where every who deserve to be known for their ability to contribute for better society and have enthusiasm able to climb up the ladder for better..." so in order to be the deserved one must earn it by facing discomfort and sacrifice comfort. ReplyDeleteMy American Dream is to get accepted into an amazing college, get into the medical field, earning my degrees, my PhD, and become an official Cardiologist. The goal is to be financially secure and not worry about money, Buying a penthouse in the Upper East Side is but a dream I’m striving to obtain. Having several sources of income that would care for my children and partner would be phenomenal. Taking care of my parents is also the main objective. I picture myself sipping a glass of wine, and smiling at my reflection from the penthouse window view, reminiscing all those hours spent on homework, and studying, then saying “Mommy, I did it, just like I promise you all those years ago, I’m here, I’m finally here.”
I strongly agree with your definition of the American Dream. I love how you explain that it is when people try to achieve freedom and to get away from oppression. The American Dream is not always about becoming a wealthy individual, but to be able to be in a society where freedom, equality, and social mobility is possible. That would be the first step in order to achieve anyone's dream. Even though the word dreams makes people believe that it is an idea that is not essentially realistic, it can become a reality once you set your mind to it and try your hardest to successfully reach your American Dream. Your American Dream seems like the modern version of people’s American Dreams in the twentieth century. Freedom and equality is still a huge dream that people have in other parts of the world, which causes them to try their hardest to travel to America as well as to other nations around the world. There are many refugees throughout the world who are seeking for an asylum. America is known to be the nation to take in people who seek out to live their American Dream of finally being free. I believe that your dream seems more like it is on the economic side as well as leans more towards your aspiration, which is what I believe most American Dreams of actual people who are born in America have become compared to decades ago. I believe that if you try your hardest to succeed, then you have a really high shot to accomplish your goals and to get really close to living your American Dream.

I agree with no matter what race you are or religon the United States give people a chance to achieve what they want. But at the same time I don't agree because those are false words of hope in my eyes. It's hard to make it to the top like the American dream is because there will always be so many competitors and you have to be willing to take a lot of risk which isn't something a lot of people would do. I like the way you think and I respect it but my view of the American Dream is a false sense of hope.

DeleteThe American Dream, is the ultimate goal of an American. To live in the promised land with opportunities and happiness; a better life. The dictionary definition is “the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved.” The American Dream is being able to achieve your goals and live the life of prosperity. My American Dream probably isn’t very spectacular. I don’t think it’s possible to have a big american dream anymore. The standards of living happily is just the bare minimum now. I just want to be able to survive, to have enough to keep on living happily. I want to be financially stable, I don’t want to be a millionaire or even make like half a million annually. Although it would be nice, I would be happy to be above the poverty line. I want to be able to maybe go travel once a year and work a job that makes me happy, not one that makes me more money. A lot of things included in my American Dream isn’t for me only necessarily, I want equality for every single person no matter the gender, race, class, religion, sexuality, etc. I want our planet to not be on the brink of death. I want everyone living the life they want not only myself. I don’t want to have burdens. My American Dream is for everyone to be happy no matter who they are. I also want universal healthcare.

However, I believe that the American Dream of each person is a bit different because the standards of living for each person is different and has changed from the standards of living of people in the previous decades. Even though the American Dream is to achieve your goals and to live a better life that is filled with opportunities, each person’s goals are a bit different. A person who lives in America may have a different dream than a person who is trying to travel to America to seek asylum. A person who lives in America may dream for something bigger like graduating from a great university and starting their own successful company, while a refugee may just simply hope to travel to America to have a new and better life. I love the way you describe your American Dream. It seems like you are ready to take on anything that happens in your life. Even though your dream sounds simple, it truly isn’t, which is why it is a dream. Instead of just dreaming of world peace, universal health care, and happiness for all, maybe try to be the one who tries to spark a bit of change.
DeleteThe American Dream is that no matter what race you are, ranking of class, and where you came from, if you work and study hard then you will have a good life and earn a lot of money. You must take the opportunities given to you and if you risk it you can live a better life. I personally think this is fake and I only to get people motivated to keep on going because only 1 to 10 percent of people change from the class they were born in like middle class or lower class. Everyone believes they can be successful like Bill Gates but that is really rare so I don't believe that the American Dream can be true for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI've read a couple of other peoples comments on this and I feel like everybody has around the same definition for the American dream, where as I feel like everybody could have their own American dream, their dream of making America the way America should be. I also don't agree that the definition of the American dream can come true for everyone, that's why people do need to hard work to accomplish their own goals which they set for themselves, and if they focus on that and work for it I think there is a good chance they can move up however high they want.

For me, my American dream is to buy my dream car. Cars in America are much cheaper than the cars in China, so achieve my American Dream will be much easier in America than in China. Also another American Dream for me is to get into a top college. Colleges in America is also much better than colleges in China, and living in America will gave a higher chance to get into top college.

And that cars is actuality cheaper than ones in china here in the U.S. But Chuan Wu don't forget about "Tsinghua University" and "Peking University" also "University of Science and Technology Beijing" they are comparable to Harvard or Yale or MIT of the U.S. But you are right that getting in top university of U.S is easier than in china. To the founding fathers the American dream could not thrive if it were not hindered by “taxation without representation.” Kings, rulers, and tyrants shouldn’t decide taxes and other laws, the people should have the right to elect officials to represent them. In the American dream people have democracy.

Of us having the right to chose how to live our lives and how to rule, but I also think that everybody has their own personal definition of the American dream, and we all should find our own ways to achieve them.

To my own personal knowledge the "American Dream" is a term used my immigrants migrating to America seeking asylum from countries that are war torn, under a dictatorship or tyrant, or other things that violates their basic human rights. This term to these people can mean something as simply as religious freedom or freedom in general. It can also mean having better opportunities to make more money and support and protect their families. Additionally in general the American Dream is defined as allowing your greatest dreams and aspirations coming true and being a success.

I know the harsh reality of America, the inequality, the racism, the sexism and much more for me to success not only because I am a woman but black. America makes it extremely difficult for anyone who is not a white man to succeed and make something of themselves. I'm not saying anyone of color or different gender or even sexuality should give up and nit try to make something of themselves and change the world. I am saying that the American Dream is an empty term for me. My basic dream and goal for my life is a be successful or smart enough to be financially stable and not to have money problems and worries they way everyone else around me does as they grow older.
I agree with the harsh reality because the American Dream is dead. The dream now is just survival and the bare minimum. Living in America isn't easy for anyone that isn't a straight white man. In the same way, I don't have an American Dream either, I just want to live freely.
DeleteI think that even though there are lots of problems in America, you girls still have many opportunities here that you would not have in other places. All over the world people of color and women don't have the chance to go to school or college. This is a very sad fact, but I don't know a single country where racism does not dominate social structures. At least here you can speak your voice and fight for social justice! This is why I work at a public school and want to be your teacher: I know it is possible for you to change your life and achieve your goals. I have many students of color who go to college for free and are achieving their goals and dreams (working in finance, going to Barnard, Howard, becoming a teacher). Of course life is easier for white men, but even though your life is not easy, because you are so smart, it is possible!

I don't thin that this is true. Not everybody has the same opportunities and not everybody is treated the same way. Many people judge by color, race or ethnicity. By law this isn't allowed so many people might think that we've achieved the American dream, but there are still biased people who pick and choose based off of these factors. My American dream has a lot to do with equality. I want women and men to be treated equally, I also want all races and religions to be treated equally. One big reason why I want to become a lawyer is because I want to make the legal system better. The US legal system is all types of messed up. I want to help innocent people from going to jail, I want every client to be treated equally by the judges and jury in the court. There are many different ways you can define the American dream, this is my very own American dream.

DeleteThe “American Dream” is really the most captivating thing to outsiders looking in to our country. Everyone had their own individual dreams and America is the place in which to seams become a reality. In my eyes, the term the American Dream refers to one who has come from nothing with the intentions of being something. For those who are living outside of the states, America has all the necessary tools in order to build them up to be their best selves. They look at us as the highest of the high and they see our ambition and our hard work ethic, everyone wants a taste of success and the American Dream is an individual's chance of tasting success. Some believe the ultimate goal is to become wealthy and to be drowning in money and luxuries but I don't believe that’s the true meaning of this phrase. Sure money is nice and helpful but one who chases after money and this “luxurious” lifestyle will find out that it can quickly turn into a nightmare. Money is not everything but Americans are stuck in this mindset of wealth being the world. When we really think about it, the times and trends are constantly changing, once we get the latest shoes or purse, something better or more flashy has been created. Americans have this tendency of wanting to have the greatest but when we begin to chase material objects that’s when we lose the American mindset. To me, the American Dream is different to everyone but at its core it the desire to be at a place in which we can be comfortable, content and happy. These are the three ideals that a “true American” dreams of obtaining. Wealth and luxury will be before your eyes one second and it will disappear the next so chasing something other than money would be a wise move. Searching and working towards a personal happiness is the essence of the American Dream.

The United States is a different world. "America" is defined by the hopes of the people that want to strive and become a better version of themselves. America has been built by this ideological system of striving for the better as means of realizing dreams channeled by hope. In other words, the "American Dream" is the metamorphosis of a vulnerable being to a fully independent and developed person. As a immigrant, I see these differences and I believe that is what makes this country a better place to live in. America has presented me with a lot of opportunities to learn and participate, I feel a fond connection to this country that, although politically and socially the US it's not the best place to live in, it's definitely a land of opportunities; where working hard and being persisten will get you anywhere. Many people give up so easily because they cannot accept failure, they are very pessimistic and give up, or either are too lazy and won't do it just because. These people are the ones that lack the sense of urgency and are single-minded who's conformity are the anchor to progress for themselves and society--like stuck in limbo without even knowing what it is . Some people who were not born here have the urgency to seek for a future and appreciate the luck and support they have. The "American Dream" states the differences between desire, want and need because it is the ideal that embraces all races, genders, and cultures that rather than being another aspect of society, it is the motivation of people in foreign land to create their own future, create their new persona and embrace their destiny. This ideal refers to the fighters of life, the ones that are alien to the true American culture.

Deletebecause everyday people are making goals and accomplishing them in order to make them unique in the world. The desire for people to be successful is very high. People just want to be the best and they work their hardest in order to accomplish that. This is why life is hard, when people set high goals for them, sometimes they have to got pass their limits which sometimes is very hard to do. It’s like going out of their comfort zone and being a different person and realizing that nothing is impossible and you can do whatever you want.
I agree with the U.S isn't the best place to live in but not for the reason you are stating. I agree because it's like a risk, you are left with two choices: giving up everything (the place you were born in, family or etc or staying there that will make you full of regrets). I think if you move to the U.S., you shouldn't listen to the "American Dream" that makes people think they are failures and made the wrong choice but instead, live their lives with joy and stop thinking about competiting when they know it's pointless.

Many immigrants moved to America for the opportunities and the better life that offers to most of it population and and the economy they had. The phrase " American dream" in my opinion stands for a goal that a person is making of succeeding and prosper and live their life they want and is called the American dream because many people succeed that goal in America. Many tv shows and books that mention the American Dream always have a common theme of wealth among other things. The wealth part is pretty self-explanatory in which I would like to have a sufficient fund in order to support myself and my family as they have done so much for me especially coming here for a better life. With wealth also comes with the responsibility of using it right and I would like to help others that are less fortunate than myself. The knowledgeable part is be well informed and have an answer to everyone and everything. To think critically and thoughtfully on different matters. I see most people nowadays have many distractions and become lazy because of it, including myself. With the rise of social media and technology I see many negative impacts like not be informed or being depressed because they didn't get enough likes on their instagram photos. It bugs me because it leads to bad mindset that overall shapes who you are as person. Being knowledgeable and aware I feel is very important in today's society. That's my American Dream.
When the society hears the American dream we all have different perspectives towards it. Some can be bad some can be good. The phrase American dream in my opinion means no matter what race, what background, how you look, where you come from, you should get the same advantage/ opportunity as everyone else. Someone should not get something from their background and race. Meaning no one shouldn’t assume things. Everyone should get fair treatment. Like let’s say gender wise a male and female wants a job. Both of them should get the same opportunities. Just because a guy is meant to be a bit superior than a female it shouldn’t mean they can’t get fair treatment. Everyone has dreams and everyone’s dreams are unique. The American dream should satisfy everyone and every race/ gender. Just because you were born in America shouldn’t mean that your the only one getting the American dream. People who are immigrants come to America to be successful and accomplish the dreams they have. Even if it’s a long term or short term goal. As the American dream you should take the opportunities that’s given to you. It’s a gift that is usually rare. You should go ahead and take it and risk your life for the good. For example I would say my parents came here for there American dream. Which is to make my life better than what they went through. Both my parents want the best for me. They want me to do my studies become something in life. To raise my next generation right and just have an amazing life. It's also related to America in the 1920's which is also known as the roaring 20's. This was the time when American economy was booming the most where people had the money to buy almost everything they like and was partying without a care in the world. The phrase the American dream varies depending on the person that's saying it, but generally it has to do with having the opportunities to do what you want to do that you can't do in the country the you originally lived in, it also have to do with being rich and wealthy and being successful in live. To me the American dream doesn't exist it's just that the United States gives their people more rights and opportunities to do what they want to do, and the common believe of being successful or rich and wealth can be achieved in almost all the countries around the world, you just have work hard towards that goal, it's just that in America you can work towards that goal with less obstacles like the chance of education because in some countries around the world education isn't free.

The American dream could just be someone coming to America just to have a better life and not just being successful and wealth, but just have an aspect of the American dream like just achieving happiness or contentedness.

All of the dictionary definitions of an American Dream is achievements, accomplishments, wealth. The American Dream is to make money and live a life that you are content with according to many sources. But to me an American Dream is the appreciation of differences. Living the American Dream is living a life that is so different from the rest of the world. Being able to experience other cultures, languages, religions. I think our differences is what makes America. I think living the American Dream is to be happy and united with everyone disregarding all differences. America is the capital of influence so this also plays a role in making the American Dream. We are what makes the world. The American Dream is living a life where you are guiding each other together happily and freely. There aren’t many other countries where that dream comes true. Definitely not where my parents are from. That’s why they came here. In third world countries you have to worry about corruption in literally everything. In third world countries you have to worry about which leader will cause what war, which group will cause what riot, and etc. The American Dream is an escape from that.
ReplyDeleteI like that your definition of how the American Dream is to appreciate and accept the differences of others. I don't think we value enough how great it is that we live in such a culturally diverse country and we are all mostly united as one. I know to most people the American Dream is to make lots of money off hard work and passion but I find your definition very fitting also.
DeleteThe denotation of “The American Dream” is that the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved. Which I do agree with but I think it's more in depth than that. To me “The American Dream” is everyone being treated equally no matter what race, gender, religion, ethnicity they come from and we're all thriving to reach our goals to become successful. Personally, my ideal American dream is living my best life, being rich, successful, and loving my job. Therefore, the definition of the American dream is very different to everyone because everyone has their own dreams they want to pursue in America. But, we all want to be successful in our own ways. Having the opportunity to live in America gives us an advantage of having free education, freedom of speech and religion without being afraid of being shot or threatened. Which is why America is so special to us because in many countries people have to pay a lot of money for their education and people living in bad conditions and women not being able to do what they want because the society or government said so. For that reason, I would say the american dream is being given the opportunity to do what you love and not being afraid of anyone holding you back.

When people have a dream, they go beyond their limits. That shows that they are determine to see it through. To see what at the end of the finish line. What accomplishment they receive? When someone tries do to something new, it’s difficult at first but once they grasp how things work, it would be easy for them. Life is about learning new things about ourselves and each other and striving to become a successful person.

I agree with one of the first thoughts of the American dream is everyone having the same opportunities no matter what you look like or what you believe in. I think the American dream was as a result of of immigrants who came to this country and made a life for themselves motivating others around the world to come to America because it was the only place we’re going for your dreams was possible.

We have things so much easier than other countries around the globe. Many would love to move to America and start their lives over. The American Dream may differ from person to person as we each have our own desires. The way we think about it and choose to achieve it will be different. Plus in the end of the day we’re all trying to succeed at something no matter how big or small the goal is. Also we all have different point of to everything so the definition of American dream would be different to all of us. We might view it as something negative or positive. DeleteTo me the meaning of the term American dream really only means one thing, the idea that you can doing anything if you put your mind to it. The American dream might mean something different to someone else but I think that not all things have to be the same and the dream someone might have on the topic is personal to them and shows what they want to be in life. You see movies, usually old ones but new ones to, talking and showing luxury to the extent that you wonder if its even real but I don’t think it is, it's a movie set in Hollywood and everything is made of plastic. The idea that the American dream is or has to do with wealth is what I disagree with your dream docent have to be about money it could simply be about moving to America to get away form your dictator or war or famine or anything that is causing you so much pain that it leaves you with no choice but to pick up your stuff and go. I think the American dream is the dream that people have when they struggling in life or anything related. It's when you have sympathy for your self when no one else will. Its when everything is going against you and you have that one dream that makes you feel a certain type of way, a way that makes you feel as if you belong like you have never felt before. To truly understand that there is a place in a world like America were there is more freedom then any where else in the world to do say or think anything you want without the fear of being killed is what allows you to excel and express yourself in a way that you weren’t able to before. Having the opportunity to do something you only dreamed of is what the American dream is. You don’t know it yet but when you have and American dream you will.
ReplyDeleteThe American Dream to the goal most citizens want to achieve in their life, which is to be successful in the future. The American Dream is also about hard work that can bring economic success. Its especially about dedication, for one’s well being and living. As an American everyone believes that everything and anything is possible. Although that might be true, loads of effort and dedication must be running through one’s mind constantly. In order to achieve your goals, you must take advantage of what you have, start off small and then go big. You must need motivation for that. That motivation can almost be found on any platform whether it be social media, the news, books, etc. The American Dream is different for anyone, but it can always be achieved when there’s dedication and determination going towards it.

My American Dream doesn’t all have to be about money, but feeling proud for what I have done, going through thick and thin to get to the place I’ll get to one day. I want to make sure I’ll leave a mark everywhere I go, so that I can remind myself that hard work and dedication for completing my goals in life really impact the way I am and think.

DeleteThe American Dream is the ideal life most people strive for when they immigrated to America. One of the biggest aspects of the American Dream is you’re able to become something even if you have nothing through hard work and dedication. America loves success stories about how individuals go from rags to riches because it gives everyone hope- hope that one day we can achieve the same thing. There is a common belief that there is so much opportunity here in America, there has to be a place here where you can prosper and succeed. Regardless of what class you are born into, there is social mobility for you as long as you are willing to work hard and make sacrifices along the way. Hard work doesn’t guarantee success because some of the hardest working people still have absolutely nothing compared to a millionaire who inherited all their money. Regardless, you are on the path of eventually getting what you’re going after if you continue to work for it.
ReplyDeleteMy American Dream revolves around not being stressed and just living life without the pressure of everyone watching everything I do. I don’t need to live a perfect life working a good job, having two kids, living in a beautifully decorated home with plenty of money. Everything I listed would be nice but those things aren’t my end goal. I don't fully know what I want. I'm just blindly moving forward until I find something that speaks to me. Many people’s American Dream revolves around money because that is just something you need but I won’t find happiness if I only focus on the wealth aspect of my life. I think I’m so willing to settle on just basic necessities because I know I don’t have the drive or ambition as some others do to become big.
I totally agree and advocate your point Joanna! It is true that a common definition of an American Dream is success in wealth and status. As a first generation American it is my job to prove to my family that is much more to America than just money. You have so much potential to become someone big but it's totally cool that you'd rather settle with being content with your life. Very interesting point made :)

I agree with your point that America is the land of opportunities. I think that everyone wants to take advantage of what America has to offer and make it into something that they can thrive from. Everyone can gain something new and benefit themselves with hard work and sacrifice. This is what an ideal American strives to achieve and for every ideal American, there is a living American Dream.
DeleteIn my opinion the American dream is coming to America and making your dreams come true. When you come to America there's opportunities to have a better life. You just have to try hard enough and be determined to get there. There's examples of immigrants who came from a poor background, traveled to America and became successful. One example is co-founder of Google, Sergey Brin, came from Moscow, Russia when it was still part of the Soviet Union, and immigrated to the U.S with his family when he was six years old. He met Larry Page and eventually dropped out to start working on Google. Today, he's now worth of 56.6 billion dollars.

I agree with your version of what the American dream is because for many people like immigrants their American dream is to come to America and have a better life.I also agree with your statement that’s many immigrants come very poor from their country and want to be stable and be able to give money to their gañimos back home and many are successful in their own way being able to give money to their families back home and be stable is being successful for them.

The American Dream is the belief that anyone can become successful in a society where creating a better life is possible for everyone. The American Dream is accomplished through sacrifice, risk-taking, and hard work, rather than by chance.
ReplyDeleteIt is about living your life to its fullest. While doing so make sure you are happy and doing things that you have always wanted to do. My American Dream is to have a high school diploma, complete a bachelor's degree, graduate from medical school and later become a dermatologist. Although it will be challenging, it is a goal im reaching towards. Eventually, I want to move out of New York and down south. After having myself together, I would want to start my own family.
The American Dream is something every American believes in and has been interpreted in various ways. Its basically said as anyone can become successful by working hard enough and thinking ahead of yourself. This Dream isn't for everyone as people's situations financially and or emotionally ready to put in the work to achieve this dream. Our American Dreams are determined on how we see the ourselves in the American Dream and how we feel our place is within that dream. In a way the American Dream is flawed as many dead end jobs exist where no matter how hard you may work you can't get out of it. I don't want to follow the American Dream as it doesn't matter whether or not if you work hard or think you can do it success takes some kind of luck and what America defines success is not always successful. I want to live and follow my hobbies, as for example playing videogames or playing basketball. To continue to do that I'm focusing on working in the Financial District and becoming a truck driver after I get to a certain point at which I'm content with.

It is true that family values have a great deal to do with our hopes and dreams. It also totally makes up our definition of an American Dream, especially for the first generation. Yes, it gets hard at times but our struggle is what best drives us!

ReplyDeleteThe American dream to me is succeeding at something that everyone wants to achieve in life. No matter your background or where you come from. Almost everyone wants a nice house, a car, a husband or wife, a few kids and maybe a household pet but this version of the ‘American Dream’ may vary. Some people want a completely different version. Something maybe far less or over the top. No matter what, it all balls down to the idea of the ‘American Dream.’ The literal definition is ‘the ideal by which equality of opportunity is available to any American, allowing the highest aspirations and goals to be achieved.’ Which I could very much agree with. My American Dream however is a little different. I do wish to achieve in life but I want to achieve something above and beyond. I want to become someone known. Maybe even put down in history. All while doing something I love. I also wish for the ideal family. A husband, kids, somewhere we could call a home, and of course a household pet.
i love the part when you said you want to be know and even put down in history because as a female i feel as though i dont learn about enough female historical figures. Yes there are many but i believe there should be more and in this generation we have the capability of being well known and we could possibly be the females that our children and our children's children learn about in school.
