Song Lyrics and Internal Conflict
A. As John prepares to finally reveal his secrets to save his wife in Act III, choose any song that you think allows us as readers to dive into the internal conflict of ONE character in The Crucible Act II.
B. Choose one stanza or line from that song to dissect, pick apart and connect to the character's inner thoughts (we will never know these thoughts, because it's a play! You'll have to inference!)
Example:
Ex--Elizabeth Proctor
Song-Adele--"Take it All" by Adele
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snU9vQNOkHw&list=RD02snU9vQNOkHw
Song Lyrics:
Didn't I give it all,
Tried my best,
Gave you everything I had,
Everything and no less?
Didn't I do it right?
Did I let you down?
But go on and take it,
Take it all with you.
Don't look back
At this crumbling fool.
Just take it all
With my love,
Take it all
With my love.
Analysis:
At the opening of Act III, Elizabeth must be waiting inside the dark jail cell, cramped with the other accused witches, thinking about her mistakes, her life and especially, John. I wonder if she feels betrayed as Adele does, when all she did was be a wife who was loyal, dutiful, bearing children. Adele says “Didn't I give it all,/Tried my best,/Gave you everything I had,/Everything and no less?”
She says "Take it, take it all" as John has not only stolen her dignity by humiliating her with his affair with Abigail; his stupid mistake, moments of lust, might cost Elizabeth her life. Her pride, her husband and her life may be taken by lust.
Take it all, take it all—will Elizabeth give her life to Abigail? Will she forfeit or stay true to her moral code?
Look What You Made Me Do, by Taylor Swift.
ReplyDeleteAbigail.
“Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me
Ooh, look what you made me do
Look what you made me do
Look what you just made me do
Look what you just made me do”
“You ask me for a place to sleep
Locked me out and threw a feast (what!?)
The world moves on, another day, another drama,
But not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma
And then the world moves on, but one thing's for sure.”
“I don't trust nobody and nobody trusts me
I'll be the actress starring in your bad dreams”
I'm sorry, the old Taylor can't come to the phone right now" (Ooh, look what you made me do)
"Why?" (Look what you made me do)
"Oh, 'cause she's dead!" (oh!)
Analys: At the beginning of Act 1, John Proctor has cheating on his wife with Abigail. Ask her for sleep, and saying sweet and soft words to flirt her. However, after John Proctor staying with Abigail for seven months, the sin inside Proctor’s heart cause him threw Abigail away. For Abigail, John Proctor is the only man she trust, and nobody in the village trust she. This causes Abigail to have a huge desire for power in Act 2. In act 2, Abigail suing Elizabeth is the witch, because she hates how Elizabeth is John Proctor’s wife and putting dirty water on her name. Suing Elizabeth this action is like telling John Proctor and Elizabeth” look what you made me do.” Abigail is also saying the old Abigail is dead after she got so much power even could decide people’s life.
In the real-life, Taylor Swift did sue a DJ while she creating Look What You Made Me Do.
Being a Taylor Swift for 7 years, oh my gosh i live for this, great song choice! I completely agree with your analysis "Abigail is also saying the old Abigail is dead after she got so much power even could decide people’s life." Awesome job explaining in full detail!
DeleteChuan wu i agree with your analysis because John proctor is the cause of Abigails actions because he showed her love Took her virginity then forgot about her and Taylor swift song look what you made me do is a perfect song because she is accusing because people of being witches like Elizabeth for revenge and is selfish she wants Elizabeth gone to take her spot.
DeleteI like this song as well and I really think this song goes so well with Abigail because she is acting out only because of her experience with John Proctor. I think you made a great choice and made it funny as well and you really did a great job expressing why this is so Abigail.
DeleteI agree with Chuan Wu on "For Abigail, John Proctor is the only man she trust, and nobody in the village trust she. This causes Abigail to have a huge desire for power in Act 2." She does what more power because John showed her what power can due which is gained more respect the ability to accuse others of crime, and thus wanted to gain Power.
DeleteWhich then later old Abigail is died. Nice work Chuan Wu.
I agree with Chuan Wu for that Abigail seeks and desire for power and how she wants to replace Elizabeth, for the song it fits in with what you said very well, but it's not my cup of tea
DeleteChuan Wu I really agree with you also I really like your song. I say the song fits in with the situation John and Abigail are in. She is being accused for things she didn’t do or know about. Such that John was doing all these things which she took the wrong way. Making her have feelings for him. John took it as whatever. Abigail also lost her virginity. Which she didn’t want and apparently she is being accused for.

ReplyDelete“Eight Letters” by Why Don't We
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3DlM19x4RQ)
Song Lyrics:
Opening and closing up again
I've been hurt so I don't trust
Now here we are, staring at the ceiling
Analysis:
Elizabeth Proctor’s internal conflict is to decide whether or not she should forgive her husband, try to forget about the affair, and try to move on. In Act II, Elizabeth and Proctor have a conversation about Proctor's affair, which led to tension being present in the room. John is trying to please Elizabeth by complimenting her and by offering to buy a cow. However, Elizabeth seems to not be able to fully forgive him. Why Don't We says, “Opening and closing up again/ I've been hurt so I don't trust/ Now here we are, staring at the ceiling.” Elizabeth doesn't know how to continue her relationship with Proctor. She will have to forgive him, however, she is constantly hurt by John Proctor's secrets. Elizabeth probably told Proctor almost everything about her. Proctor knows everything about Elizabeth, but when Proctor began to keep his affair a secret, she most likely thought that she doesn't know him as well as she used to know him. They were probably very close and now, Elizabeth just doesn't know how to trust John. Therefore, she “stares at the ceiling,'' which means that she is looking onto the future and wonders what she did to have her fate end up with potential death. Elizabeth makes herself seem like a lion with no fear in her eyes, but she definitely is afraid of dying and leaving her children motherless. Now here we are—will Proctor save Elizabeth's life as penance for his sins? Will the devil of vengeance and fear consume many people of Salem including Elizabeth Proctor?
Reading the lyrics alone was enough for me to tell which character it described. These lyrics set the tone and mood for Elizabeth and John’s current relationship. “Opening and closing up again” , Elizabeth has been with John for a long time and to find out of the unloyal decisions he’s made Abigail leads her to the next line “ Ive been hurt so I don’t trust.” Elizabeth has admitted she’s lost hope in John as it seemed to her that he couldn’t choose between his own wife or a teenage girl. Lastly, “now here we are staring at the ceiling.” This line contains imagery. You can visualize the tension or awkwardness in the room as both are quiet and in their own thoughts as the “look at the ceilings”.
Deleteas they ^
DeleteI agree with Michelle's analysis on the meaning of the song. That opening and closing up meaning she is trying to forgive John, but closing up due to remembering the affair or more so of the hiding of secrets and faltering to the court. Then the been so hurt that I don't trust is cause by her seeing John faltering or action wise showing discomfort many times. Looking at ceiling is like wondering or finding what future will be "on" the walls. I found more lyrics to help support Michelle's analysis, "I've said those words before but it was a lie. And you deserve to hear them a thousand times" That can represent she is tired of John lying in the past or hiding a secret by it. Nice work Michelle.

Song Lyrics:
Before I die alone
Before my time has gone
There's just one thing I have to do
Before the fire and stone
Before your world is gone
Have you some patience
Cuz I will have my vengeance
Before I die alone
Let me have vengeance
Before my time has gone
I will have vengeance
Analysis:
When Abigail in Act 1, being questioned by Reverend Parris about her chaste due to he hear the reason why Abigail was fired by John Proctor and Elizabeth due to her affair with John Proctor, and less appearance in church. She react explosively, saying it was wrong she is clean, and it was Elizabeth who is ruining her name and telling bad things about her. Then when she meets with John later. John rejected her she says to him, his wife is sickly, and "she had blacken her name, she is telling lies, cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her. "(Miller P24).Then later we know her intended action of Drinking a Charm's blood is to curse or kill Elizabeth according to Betty. And when the time comes to Act 2 Abigail had power and trust she never had due to the fact that she is the ' "witness" and "victim" of witchcraft and of certain innocents. She accuses Elizabeth known from Marry's mouth indirectly. Later Elizabeth taken to court. Explanation: "Before I die alone. Before my time has gone. There's just one thing I have to do. Before the fire and stone. Before your world is gone."This relates to her remembering Elizabeth in her way and her failed relationship with John And realizing she can act about it after having power to decide life or dead. "Have you some patience. Cuz I will have my vengeance." Relates to Abigail have the power then plan her way to let him feel what it's like to lost someone they adore. As she has lost her parents, now her source of entertainment. Thus she "will" have her revenge by accusing Elizabeth. To make John felt guilty in not going to court earlier on, and powerless, couldn't prevent her from taken away. Just like she can't do anything but watch her parents get killed. Failed to keep John with her.
I don't really agree with "Failed to keep John with her"because int he first place she never had John. John pushed her away and maybe because of that Abigail still loved John but craved power more and then thinks she can use this power to get what she want even if the way she is getting it is ending peoples lives.
DeleteI agree with in Act 2 Abigail had a power and trust she never had due to the fact that she is the "witness" and "victim" of witchcraft and of certain innocents because in Act 2 Abigail confessed to Proctor that she drank a charm she got power and trust. This was also followed by the other girls confessing that they also drank charms.

I was lost, I was trying to find the answer
In the world around me
Yeah, I was going crazy
All day, all night
You were there for me through all the times I cried
I was there for you and then I lost my mind
I know that I messed up but I promise I
Oh-oh, I can make it rightT
his eternal night with no end in sight
It’s you who gifted me the morning
Now can I hold that hand?
Oh oh
I can make it right
Everything was useless
Anything other than you
Oh I can make it right
Analysis:
In act III John proctor must be feeling regret , hatred, and humiliation for not going right away to the court and telling the judges that Abigail was faking about being bewitched and because of that, his wife is probably at risk of dying as stated " John - I think I must go with them"(Miller 82). In the lyrics, one of the lines say oh I can make it right which is what I think John proctor is going to do because he said " I will bring you home. I will bring you soon" (Miler 82). This might show that he is choosing Elizabeth over his reputation because in order to set Elizabeth free, he must tell the court Abigail is faking it but they don't know how he knows so he will have to admit he had done adultery to prove Abigail tricks. He realizes how much his wife meant to him and that he must do what's right to save his wife as stated "Fear Nothing. I'll find Ezekiel Cheever. I'll tell him she said it were all sport"(Miller 64). With Mary Warren's help, they might actually be able to save Elizabeth and others who are accused but it might turn the other way around. But in the end John is trying to save his wife by trying to "Make it Right".
I strongly agree with Susanna’s analysis because John Proctor’s internal conflict is whether he should keep his reputation clean or if he should confess and potentially save his wife as well as maybe many more innocent people. In Act II, John Proctor continues to contemplate about what he should do in order to try to amend his relationship. BTS says, “ I was lost, I was trying to find the answer.” John Proctor had a difficult time with the magistrate in his heart because he was feeling extremely guilty for cheating on his wife. He was lost, and he was trying to find the answer by trying to make it up to Elizabeth by pleasing her, trying to stay away from Abigail, and by complimenting her. I strongly agree with the fact that Susanna stated that John might try to confess his sin of committing adultery and he will try to save his wife from being hanged. Even though John did falter and questioned whether or not he should keep his reputation clean, he probably decided that his wife is more important. BTS says, “Everything was useless/ Anything other than you/ Oh I can make it right.” John’s mind is stuck to the idea of saving his wife. Everything else like his reputation is useless to him. John definitely wants to make it right by not only saving his wife, but by saving the people from Salem from the devil of vengeance.
DeleteI agree on what you said about John feeling hatred and humiliation because he could have confessed about the whole affair situation and Elizabeth would’ve been with him. However he didn’t, now he has no choice to and reveal everything. This may ruin his reputation but I don’t think John really cares about his reputation, all he cares about is now having Elizabeth back to him and showing Elizabeth that he actually loves her and will do anything for her.

ReplyDeleteSong: "Scarborough Fair" by Simon and Garfunkel
https://youtu.be/6aoe8mBbevU
Lyrics:
Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Remember me to one who lives there
For once she was a true love of mine
Have her make me a cambric shirt
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Without no seam nor fine needle work
And then she'll be a true love of mine
Tell her to weave it in a sycamore wood lane
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
And gather it all with a basket of flowers
And then she'll be a true love of mine
Have her wash it in yonder dry well
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
where water ne'er sprung nor drop of rain fell
And then she'll be a true love of mine
Have her find me an acre of land
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Between the sea foam and over the sand
And then she'll be a true love of mine
Plow the land with the horn of a lamb
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Then sow some seeds from north of the dam
And then she'll be a true love of mine
Tell her to reap it with a sickle of leather
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
And gather it all in a bunch of heather
And then she'll be a true love of mine
If she tells me she can't, I'll reply
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Let me know that at least she will try
And then she'll be a true love of mine
Love imposes impossible tasks
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Though not more than any heart asks
And I must know she's a true love of mine
Dear, when thou has finished thy task
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme
Come to me, my hand for to ask
For thou then art a true love of mine
Analysis: John Proctor’s internal conflict is his regret of adultery with Abigail and faltering when he was needed the most, when the court began he could have told the truth and stopped all this madness that happens in Salem. In Act II towards the ending when Cheever arrives with a warrant to capture Elizabeth on the accusation of witchcraft, John tries to stand up and stop Cheever from taking Elizabeth away. In the song the line “Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme” This line is a repetition because it’s an important aspect of the song, parsley represents comfort, sage represents strength, rosemary represents love, and thyme represents courage. This connects to John Proctor’s love for Elizabeth even though he committed adultery, his strength and courage to protect Elizabeth from being taken away from him and hanged as shown through John Proctor's actions in Act II and Act III, because John is willing to do whatever he can to save Elizabeth even revealing the truth to the court even though it’s too late and will try his best to save Elizabeth and stop the girls from their rampage causing chaos in Salem.
I am agree with you that John is willing to do whatever he can to save Elizabeth. Also in real case, John was hanged on August 19, 1692 in Salem Village. Maybe this is the cost of saving Elizabeth?
DeleteI agree with you Hao because John is willing to be “naked” to save Elizabeth that means to show his true self that is a sinner he feels deeply sorry about commuting adultery and regrets doing it and tried to make it up to Elizabeth. When she is taken he promises her she will be freed. This song is perfect it reprenda the love he feels towards Elizabeth and is willing to do what ever to make sure she is safe.
DeleteI strongly agree with Hao because John Proctor's internal conflict is indeed the idea of him feeling guilty about committing lechery and deciding whether he should keep his reputation clean or if he should confess his sin. In Act II, when John finds out that Elizabeth is being taken away for the accusation of witchcraft, his whole world turns around by one hundred and eighty degrees. Simon and Garfunkel say, "Love imposes impossible tasks/ Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme." John Proctor has to decide whether or not his reputation is more important than his wife. He probably knows that confessing his sin will be extremely difficult to do. However, the love for his wife "imposes impossible tasks", which may seem impossible, but they are just extremely hard to accomplish since it takes personal strength within him in order to achieve. This is why John says, “...we are only what we always were, but naked now” (Miller 85). He is trying to explain that everyone will be stripped away from their sins. This whole event and chaos will lead to everyone in Salem to be seen as their true colors, which means that John may not be the only person who confesses his sins, but there are probably many other people who will to. Abigail may also seem not as powerful as she is now after John breaks the wall of concealing and also opens up the wall of confession and sins. Therefore, it will take courage, true love, and personal strength in order for John to confess his sins at the court, which will lead to him potentially saving his wife as well as many other innocent individuals.
DeleteI agree with John Proctor will try his best to save Elizabeth and stop the girls from their rampage causing chaos in Salem. John Proctor tells Elizabeth in Act II he will bring her home soon before she leaves and gets chained by Herrick and Cheever.

ReplyDeleteSong: I Did Something Bad - Taylor Swift
Album: reputation (2017)
Song Lyrics:
I never trust a narcissist, but they love me
So I play 'em like a violin
And I make it look—oh—so easy
'Cause for every lie I tell them, they tell me three
This is how the world works
Now all he thinks about is me
I can feel the flames on my skin
Crimson-red paint on my lips
If a man talks shit
Then I owe him nothing
I don't regret it one bit
'Cause he had it coming
They say I did something bad
Then why's it feel so good?
They say I did something bad
But why's it feel so good?
Most fun I ever had
And I'd do it over and over and over again if I could
It just felt so good, good
They're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one
They got their pitchforks and proof, their receipts and reasons
...they're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one
So light me up (light me up), light me up (light me up)
Light me up, go ahead and light me up (light me up)
Analysis:
In The Crucible, Abigail Williams internal conflict is whether or not to keep playing the blaming game, or to tell the truth and keep people from being killed and accused of witchcraft. In the beginning of Act I, Abigail Williams wanted to kill Elizabeth Proctor so that she could have Elizabeth’s husband, John Proctor all to herself. In Act I, the author stated “You did, you did! You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife! You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!” - Betty Parris to Abigail (Miller 20) In the song “I Did Something Bag” by Taylor Swift she said “Then I owe him nothing / I don't regret it one bit / Cause he had it coming” This line could be referred to Abigail’s obsession with John Proctor, and the fact that he did her wrong. It’s more of a general statement regarding the criticism Taylor and Abigail could get for calling or seeking revenge on men with their poor behavior towards them. In Act II, Elizabeth Proctor is accused of voodoo according to the accounts of Reverend Hale. In Act II the author states “ … a needle has been found inside this poppet (doll) ...ask Abby, Abby sat beside me when I made it” Hale to Mary Warren. “Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck into her belly- and she charges me? Aye” Elizabeth to Hale. (Miller 80) To the reader, Abigail might of known of Elizabeth’s doll and it’s usage of sticking needle pins to not lose them. In pop culture and dark magic, voodoo doll spells can work even if the person targeted by the spell is a great distance away. Abigail wanted to keep up the game so that she could have power and control over the citizens of the town of Salem. Once again in the song “I Did Something Bad” by Taylor Swift, she states “Most fun I ever had/ And I'd do it over and over and over again if I could / It just felt so good, good” The Salem Witch Trials correlates to this line due to “Grab your pitchforks” which refers to the mass hysteria during these incidents surrounding the ‘supernatural evil’ these ‘witches’ were accused to be involved in. Witchcraft was generally regarded as something that never existed meaning many innocent women were condemned to death by burning or hanging. Abigail is the real witch, the real menacing evil behind all the frenzy and chaos in the Salem Town.
“...they're burning all the witches, even if you aren't one / So light me up (light me up)” They should burn her or perhaps kill her for the wrong doings she’s committed.
I fully agree with you, I think your song choice is perfect for your explanation of why Abigail is lying about the Devil and about women being involved with Witchcraft. In the beginning Abigail might've been pushed to lie by her love for John Proctor and she tried everything she could to have him for herself, that's also why she drank chicken blood, but now that we're further in the book I also agree that her intentions have changed and the reason she's accusing innocent women now, is because she has all the power and she wants it to stay that way. Since she has worked herself up to the top where she's able to accuse Elizabeth, a woman who has a husband, children and owns lots of land, which is the highest position you could have as a woman. Understandable that she wouldn't want to give up the power now that she is capable of doing whatever she wants.
Delete-Emma
Abigail is an evil character, yet very smart and decisive. She knows what she want but her objective will change. Her obsession over Proctor granted her more orient and motive to continue the trials, however, now it’s unclear what she wants. In Salem where evil lies, Abigail will have a hard time deciding whether she will continue the trials to obtain more power or to have Proctor. She knows that telling lies in a town of narcissists is the norm, “‘Cause for every lie I tell them, they tell me three/ This is how the world works”. Every single individual in Salem has its own shadow, the majority are surrounded by desire of wealth or passion. This song provides a really good depiction of Salem, where Abigail has all the power now and enjoys it, surrounded by oblivious people who follow, and a faltering heart that “Now all he thinks is about me”.
DeleteI agree you!
DeleteElizabeth is most definitely the model Christian women, she surrenders to God and knows that He is the only judge. However, as John’s wife, she obviously has a strong opinion about his affair with Abigail Williams. She finds it difficult to put that aspect of her relationship in the past and move forward. I agree with you when you say that she is haunted by her husbands lack of loyalty because she knows that his sin is great in the eyes of God.

Well I remember, I remember don't worry
How could I ever forget,
It's the first time, the last time we ever met
But I know the reason why you keep your silence up,
No you don't fool me
The hurt doesn't show
But the pain still grows
It's no stranger to you and me
And I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
Well, I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord
But I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord
But I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord
I can feel it in the air tonight, oh Lord, oh Lord, oh Lord
But I've been waiting for this moment for all my life, oh Lord, oh Lord
Analysis: Proctor has slept with Abigail which is the thing he "could ever forget". "But the pain still grows It's no stranger to you and me" shows his faults as his cheating has really hurt John Proctor's conscience. In the lyrics "I can feel it coming in the air tonight Oh Lord", is the possibility of stating his lechery in front of the court. His life is at stake also which is why the "Oh Lord" part is integral as Proctor knows his life is at stake just as much as Elizabeth's. He always wanted to prove to his wife his love for her and this is his one and only chance so that is why he's "been waiting for this all his life".
I agree with your statement good sir. Cheating can affect anyone in a negative way. Your analysis gives me a clear sight on what John is feeling.

F-R-I-E-N-D-S
In act I of the Crucible the affair between Abigail and John Proctor is revealed.
Abigail is 17 and John proctor is a married man in his 30s. He cheated on his wife with Abigail, and he feels much guilt for it. As the play goes on we see how the affair they had was more one sided from Abigail’s side because John Proctor regrets ever being with Abigail. The song relates to that very much since it says “I’ve told you one. Two, three, four, five, six thousand times…. F-R-I-E-N-D-S” and the person she’s telling that to in the song obviously does not understand that she just wants to be friends. For Abigail and Proctor its the other way around because it’s him telling her that he doesn’t like her but she won’t understand.
-Emma Jumpelt
Nice work, your song choice is spot on. You explained and added emphasis as to why Abigail seems to not get the memo that John Proctor only wants to remain friends. "I've told you one. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six thousand times." this quotation from the song demonstrates our point clearly. Nicely done!

Love me like you do, lo-lo-love me like you do
Touch me like you do, to-to-touch me like you do
What are you waiting for?
Analysis:
In The Crucible Abigail desires to be with John Proctor and she wants him to see how badly she wants him. In Act I Abigail pours her heart put to John expressing how she feels. " (in tears). I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the lying lessons I was taught by all these Christian woman and their covenanted men! And now you cannot! You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you loved me yet!.... John, pity me, pity me! (Miller 25). Abigail just wants John to love her despite that it goes against everything that the puritans go by. In the song "Love Me Like You Do" by Ellie Goulding she says " love me like you do/what are you waiting for", this relates to Abigail because throughout the play Abigail proves that the only reason she is acting out and doing the things that she is doing is because she just wants to feel that "love" that John gave her when she used to work for him. She wants John to stop the games and she wants him to be with her through all the drama that comes with them being together and through thick and thin. the song also says "You can see the world you brought to life, to life", I feel like Abigail connects to this line so much because before she was touched by John she still had her childhood and she probably was not like the way she is now but as soon as John opened up a whole new world to Abigail she seeks for more and she wants it from the one that introduced her to the new world which is John.
I agree with you for the most part, but I do think that Abigails intentions changed as we got further into the book. At first she just wanted John Proctor to herself and get Elizabeth out of the picture, I'm not saying that that's not still what she wants to do but I think that's not her main focus anymore. I think now that she has all the power in the town she's trying everything to keep it. She worked her way up and now that she's finally at the top she wants to do find ways to use that power for her own benefit.

Analysis:
In the beginning of Act II, Elizabeth and John Proctor are having a very awkward conversation. Ever since John's infidelity, he's been walking eggshells around Elizabeth. Elizabeth claims that she has forgiven john for his sin, and that he's the one being hard on himself about the affair. She's trying to move on just like Beyonce when she had forgiven her husband after cheating. Beyonce states, "Trade your broken wings for mine / I've seen your scars and kissed your crime". Elizabeth says "seen your scars and kissed your crime" as she tries to move on from Johns affair
Later in Act II, Elizabeth is accused of being a witch by Abigail, Johns mistress. John knew that there weren't witches in Salem, for Abigail told him herself. However, he didn't say nothing to the court and because of that his wife was wrongfully accused for a crime she didn't commit. Instead of fighting the accusations, Elizabeth agreed to go into custody. She says "trade your broken wings for mine," as she turns herself in, for she took the fall for something that John Proctor failed to do - testify against his ex-mistress.

ReplyDelete“Keep on Lying” - Tame Impala
Lyrics:
“All I give are little clues
Maybe one day I'll get through
But there is nothing I can do
I'll just keep on lying to you
I only need to say it's true
Your poor little heart already knew
But there is nothing you can do
I'll just keep on lying to you
Should my cover ever blow
Would you ever let it go?
There is something you should know
But hell if I'd ever let it show
So here I am, trying to be strong
It was noon, now my shadow's long
...”
Analysis:
John Proctor’s internal conflict is the secrets he is keeping to himself (and their consequences). The obvious one is Proctor’s lechery but the one that really eats him up now is Proctor knows that what Abigail is doing has nothing to do with witchcraft and that all the chaos is from Salem quarrels. The first line, “All I give are little clues,” I see that as Proctor not completely telling Elizabeth the truth, like when he said that he spoke with Abigail with publically. The next lines, “Maybe one day I'll get through/ But there is nothing I can do/ I'll just keep on lying to you,” and in the third stanza, “There is something you should know,” I see as Proctor thinking about telling the truth and struggling with what to do. One day he’ll tell everyone his secrets and sins but he doesn’t because his reputation was more important. (So he kept lying). The last two lines, “So here I am, trying to be strong/ It was noon, now my shadow's long,” represents John’s quality of being a “strong” man. John has a good heart and tries very hard to do things that reflect that. But he has stalled for too long and now everything is falling to chaos. Proctor has kept this to himself for a week and now he has to watch his wife be arrested because of his hesitation.
:D You chose a song by Tame Impala!! It is indeed really interesting to see John's side of the story. Struggling on whether or not to be completely honest with his wife, letting her know about his sins completely or just giving little pieces of random information to her, playing it safe. And I love the connections you did with the lyrics, John is definitely trying to be "strong".

Song lyrics:
I met someone new last night and we kicked it
And I'm going back there tonight
And you know what's on my mind, this time
Going back there tonight
And you know what's on my mind
...
Out of body
That's just how I feel when I'm around you shawty
Last night we didn't say it, but girl we both thought it
Why second guess? I should have stayed
You say the word, I'm on the way
This shit feels like teenage fever
I'm not scared of it, she ain't either
Why second guess? I should have stayed
'Cause you know what's on my mind tonight
If you had my love
And I gave you all my trust
Would you comfort me?
Analysis:
At the start of Act two John and Elizabeth are having a cold conversation filled with awkwardness. Drake says“I met someone new last night and we kicked it And I'm going back there tonight” understanding that he cheated and still had some feelings toward Abigail even though claiming to be over her. Since Proctor told Elizabeth that Abigail was just playing around in the woods, Elizabeth wanted to expose her by Mr.Proctor snitching at the courts. John struggles with going to snitch and revealing his sinful act he commited to save his wife. His lack of affection and want for her shifted toward the end when he realized he was losing his wife after he got arrested which sparked his love for her wanting to fight for her. Drake says “That's just how I feel when I'm around you shawty Last night we didn't say it, but girl we both thought it Why second guess? I should have stayed You say the word, I'm on the way” John Proctor realizes that his love is still for Elizabeth and wants to continue his marriage.

If you really really love me
I can not stand a day without you really really
I really want to stick with it really
If you really really want me
Really really
Really different from the other guy really
Tell me I'll take the stars in the sky
Good when you do not have a lot of time
Tell her to look at another girl's view
Sometimes I want a lie that does not sound like a lie
A woman around you without a star
Stop and manage
You're coming to me anyway
Better act like you know what
Better act like you know what
Eyes have been callin me baby
Body been tellin me take me
Boys have been sayin to date me
Your lips should be sayin the same thing
For real what’s the deal got a feelin you feelin me
Aye but I don’t play with them fakes
Keep it real with me
If you really really love me
I can not stand a day without you really really
I really want to stick with it really
If you really really want me
Really really
Really different from the other guy really
I'll give you two if you give me one
No, no
If the two of you meet your eyes
I was lonely yesterday because of you no more
Do not chew on me even if I drink alcohol yeah
Do not believe my words, it's over now yeah
It's not complicated. It's easy. 1, 2, 3
Imagine if we could be one
Want a romance like the old times
Want to slow dance when it's show time
Just me and you, and that slow jam
That playlist, my favorite, so play it, but baby
F a love song I need you to say it, say it
If you really really love me
I can not stand a day without you really really
I really want to stick with it really
If you really really want me
Really really
It's different from other men
I gotta know that you’re for real
Really really really
I gotta know that you’re for real
Really really really
I gotta know that you’re for real
Really really really
I gotta know that you’re for real
Really really really
Analysis: In the crucible, when Elizabeth found out that John and Abigail had an affair, she was heartbroken. She thought that John loved her and was a loyal man. However, Elizabeth was wrong, she didn't know whether to forgive him or leave him. Elizabeth did decide to forgive, since it was her only choice, but there came a question does John genuinely love her? In Act 2 John said to Elizabeth that Abigail and John were alone together when he went to Salem, Elizabeth says " You were alone with her?... (quietly- she has suddenly lost all faith in him) Do you wish, then.(she starts to turn)" (Miller 57). Elizabeth thought John had cut all ties with Abigail, so when she heard that John was alone with Abigail, it was like history was repeating itself again. This is why I picked the song Really by Blackpink, this song shows how if a boy really wants the girl again and if the girl accepts him the love he is giving is real. This is perfect for describing the relationship between Elizabeth and John because Elizabeth is still questioning whether or not John truly loves her. Then the song continues where they sang, "Want a romance like old times, want to slow dance when it's show time, just me and you" both Elizabeth and John wants to go back how it was before the affair happened, however Elizabeth doesn't want Abigail to ruin it again and John doesn't know that despite of what happened, Elizabeth forgave him. It's just that John can't find it in his heart to forgive himself. Then the song ends by the lines "I gotta know that you're for real, really really really" In the end all Elizabeth wants is for John to prove that he won't make the same mistake twice and that his love now is as pure as it was when they first fell in love.
I am disagree with you where you said"However, Elizabeth was wrong, she didn't know whether to forgive him or leave him." For Elizabeth, there's two choices, either forgive John, or keep mad at John. Elizabeth doesn't have the power to leave John.

And I can't take it
I was wonderin' maybe, can I have back my baby?
If I did somethin' special, would that make me look crazy?
If you ask me, I'm ready
Can I ask you, are you ready?
Analysis: Abigail admits to John Proctor that she is most happy with him. Their lecherous behavior has led to Abigail being attached to John knowing that they shouldn’t have been together in the first place. Even John knows that he is married and having affairs would hurt his wife. Now that he wants to keep a distance from Abigail in order to gain his wife’s trust back, Abigail will stop at NOTHING to have her way. In the beginning she had already drank chicken blood to win John Proctors heart. Now she has accused Johns wife of witchcraft so that she could be arrested or even worse, hanged. Abigail has much power at the moment so she is taking advantage of the opportunity to black mail others while getting what she wants.
The song you chose truly summarizes Abigail's deepest feelings for John Proctor. The line "If I did somethin' special, would that make me look crazy", from your chosen song, connects with Abigail because it illustrates how she is willing to go extensive measures to get with Proctor. In her mind, she belongs with John Proctor because he has captivated her heart and she has grown very attached to him. We know Abigail's motivation is complex but we see how shes doing it for what she believes is love.

Like, who been on your mind?
Who got your time?
Who you been vibin' wit and why I can't make you mine?
You used to be texting me, checking me, calling me your slime
And now you treat me like my worth less than a dime
Analysis:
In the beginning of Act 1, Abigail expresses her feelings her John and doesn’t want to forget about him. Her feelings are continuous throughout Act 1-2. She never wants to forget the affair she had with him. It was a new experience for her. But soon John regretted ever having an affair with her and wants to forget that that ever happened. “Like, who been on your mind?/Who got your time?/Who you been vibin' wit and why I can't make you mine?” This lyric connects with Abigail because she wants to know why Elizabeth deserves to be with him, when it should actually be Abigail. She wants John to be hers and for him to be with Elizabeth. She thinks she is better than Elizabeth, therefore she thinks John deserves better, but John doesn’t put much thought towards Abigail’s feelings towards him.
this is stephani by the way
DeleteAbigail's internal conflict is that she desperately wants John despite the very consequences. She went through thick and thin to prove it as well, which is shown through the lyrics of the song you picked. Although as we read we see her motives change. From simply just doing it out of love, she started going for being powerful.
DeleteMary Warren & “Hurt” by Oliver Tree
ReplyDeleteSong Lyrics:
I’m sorry if I hurt you,
I’m sorry if it got that bad
I’m sorry I can’t help you,
someone should’ve had your back.
I tried but, I don’t think so,
maybe it was me who was f**king up.
Analysis:
In Act II, Mary Warren arrives back at the Proctors home and she is acting strange. She has just come back after a long day of being in Salem accusing the other powerless women for being witches. In the play, you see how the guilt is eating away at Mary’s consciousness. She gives Elizabeth Proctor a poppet she made to relieve some of the guilt she has been building up. The lyrics “I’m sorry if I hurt you/ I’m sorry if it got that bad” can accurately reflect Mary’s mindset because she is feeling bad for wrongfully accusing others. Furthermore, Mary is beginning to recognize the consequences for her actions but she feels like it is too late to speak up. I do believe Mary is genuinely sorry for what she has done because she never wanted anyone to get hurt from her and the girls actions. Even in Act I she was ready to tell the truth, but Abigail stops her. The pressure from the other girls is the reason why she feels so powerless as exemplified in Act II: “I cannot, they’ll turn on me-” (85). Mary will continue to internally struggle with this conflict if she doesn’t speak up and more people get hurt.
I agree with you when you say that Mary Warren feels guilty for being apart of a court that is looking to prosecute her employer, Elizabeth Proctor. This is the exact reason why she makes the poppet for Goody Proctor. I also agree that Mary Warren is genuinely sorry and she really does feel guilty. Although Mary is sad and she has regret, at this point, it is too late to back down. She is scared for Elizabeth but she is also scared for herself. If she goes anginas the girls, they too will go against her.

Song Lyrics:
“I will never bother you
I will never promise to
I will never follow you
I will never bother you
Never say a word again
I will crawl away for good
I will move away from here
You won't be afraid of fear
No thought was put into this
I always knew it would come to this
Things have never been so swell
And I have never failed to fail
Pain

Pain
You know you're right
You know you're right
You know you're right
It's so warm and calm inside
I no longer have to hide
There's talk about someone else
Sterling silver begins to melt
Nothin' really bothers her
She just wants to love herself
…”
Analysis: John Proctor has been a self-afflicted character since the beginning of this play. As we move forward into the acts we begin to find a more deeper hole in his soul. We realize that there are quite of few conflicts battling within him. Mainly Proctor’s internal conflict within himself is that he believes he is the reason for Elizabeth’s downfall. He strongly believes that for him, Elizabeth is being sent to jail and will be possibly murdered. Every single aspect of the song, “You Know You’re Right” by Nirvana deeply can be deciphered with John Proctor’s inner emotion. The song starts off with a slow sad melody and delicate touches of bass, drums, and of course the electric guitar. This was how life was strolling for Proctor. John Proctor was a regretful upsetting man since the first time we were introduced to him. The song then develops a more faster paced, even it can be seen as an angry tone, a build up in frustration. You can hear it loud and clear through Kurt Cobain’s voice (lead singer). This relates to Proctor’s build up of frustration. He tries his hardest to change, to forget about his past, to convince his wife that he is a changed loyal man. But nothing seems to really work for him. Towards the end of the song you can sense the way Kurt Cobain starts to lose hope and give himself up. The crisp lyrics and the flow of each strum all come together to exactly represent John Proctor’s build up of emotion. The way John decides to sacrifice himself for his love for Elizabeth. The way Proctor blames himself and realizes that Elizabeth has been right the entire time. How he will finally unleash himself in order to save Elizabeth. Even the song perfectly examines Goody Proctor”s (Elizabeth) herself. Elizabeth had been strong throughout the whole two acts that we’ve read so far, she didn’t let anyone bother her. Even when she knows that she may, in the next second she would be murdered.

ReplyDeleteSong: La Femme - Tueur de fleurs
Lyrics:
You think you're doing a good thing by wanting to protect her from evil,
But you yourself are this evil.
When she started to blossom,
You shattered her dreams without considering her desires.
Now cry, awful Flower-Killer
You've just realized that
That flower was a rare one
Analysis:
As we dive into Act III, Abigail must have already plotted her whole scheme. All the time she had while being in the courtroom would’ve let her organized her thoughts. In the beginning, she was just a young adult who was in love with a married man, she had no power whatsoever. However, gaining power from falsely accusing others of being connected to the devil would certainly make her fancy this new her. During Act II, she probably didn’t prioritize her love for John Proctor, but rather her power. She held onto her grudge of not being able to be with John and saw she could use her power to get Elizabeth Proctor killed, and is currently in the process of doing so. I believe these lyrics would reflect Abigail’s thoughts when John Proctor comes to save Elizabeth. “You think you’re doing a good thing by wanting to protect her from evil,/But you yourself are this evil.” How can John Proctor save Elizabeth who is innocent and clean when he himself broke a commandment? “You’ve just realized that/That flower was a rare one” Abigail is sure she is able to get Elizabeth killed, and that John wouldn't be able to save her because he has committed adultery and definitely wouldn’t confess on it.
The lyrics of your song are really interesting connecting to Abigail. This song makes me think about Abigail's future actions and the consequences of what she is doing right now to Elizabeth and other women. The line "You shattered her dreams without considering her desires," here Abigail is destroying Elizabeth's life without forethought. The following lines make me wonder if Abigail will feel guilt later on if someone does end up dying by her hand, will Abigail realize that Elizabeth, a true puritan, didn't deserve what she got.
DeleteAbigail does hold a grudge against Elizabeth. All she wanted was to be prioritized by John. If John forgot and lost feelings for Elizabeth, Abigail thinks that he would of loved her instead. But Abigail should just forget about it. Her affair with John was supposedly a mistake that she should forget about. She truly can;t forget about it because that was the first time and a total new experience for her. Abigail wanted more of that.

Song lyrics: You gotta go and get angry at all of my honesty
You know I try but I don't do too well with apologies
I hope I don't run out of time, could someone call a referee?
'Cause I just need one more shot at forgiveness
I know you know that I made those mistakes maybe once or twice
By once or twice I mean maybe a couple of hundred times
So let me, oh let me redeem, oh redeem, oh myself tonight
'Cause I just need one more shot at second chances
Yeah, is it too late now to say sorry?
'Cause I'm missing more than just your body
Oh, is it too late now to say sorry?
Yeah, I know that I let you down
Is it too late to say I'm sorry now?
Analysis:In the opening of Act 2 John proctor and Elizabeth , John feels guilty that he cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail so he wants to make it up to her and feels like he is being judged by Elizabeth and Justin Bieber says “yea is it too late now to say sorry I know that I let you down” he says cause I just need one more chance at forgiveness” as John tries to please Elizabeth she keeps reminding him oh his affair and doesn’t trust him and thinks he is lying because he said he wasn’t alone with Abigail which he was. John just wants Elizabeth forgiveness but he judges himself he complements Elizabeth flavorless food and what to buy her a animal he recognizes what he has done and feels terrible about himself but Elizabeth judgement and his won’t let surpass what happened. Elizabeth tells him to do as he pleases and John thinks it’s to late to say sorry since she won’t care what he does as he humiliated her by sleeping with a servant.
I agree with this comment because John wants Elizabeth to forgive him so much; however, he still hasn't forgiven himself for the adultery. He's too scared to admit to himself that he has to move on, and find ways to get his wife to trust him again not forgive him. He had his chance by going to court and admitting that Abigail is lying, but he faltered and now Elizabeth is going to jail for what he didn't do.
DeleteI agree with Carlos that John seeks forgiveness from Elizabeth for what he has done and tries to make up for her anyway he can or could and how he feels judged by Elizabeth even though to Elizabeth it was John himself who is judging himself. Adultery is a crime but from Elizabeth's perspective she has to deal with it whether she likes it or no since she have to rely on John to live.
DeleteThe character is pretty obvious from this song. John Proctor is still trying to make amends with his wife Elizabeth before its too late. He feels guilty and trys to stay away from Abigail.

"Sorry, won't turn back the clock
Baby I took advantage 'cause I knew you
Wouldn't believe it, so I used you
I'm sorry, oh I'm sorry don't make it right, I know"
Analysis: In the opening of Act II, John Proctor and his wife Elizabeth Proctor are still having marital issues. She seems very distant with John because she knows he cheated on her with Abigail Williams. John is overwhelmed with guilt every time he's even in Elizabeth's presence. He will do anything to please her or in this case save her life. In the song 'Sorry' by Rick Ross featuring Chris Brown, Chris sings "Sorry won't turn back the clock." No matter what John does, he feels Elizabeth still hasn't forgiven him for his mistakes with Abigail. He regrets the fact that he can't go back in time and fix what he's done with Abigail. The lines 'Baby I took advantage 'cause I knew you' also applies to Johns situation because of the way he took advantage of what he had which was Elizabeth. Elizabeth has done nothing but a good wife and mother. John was blinded by that when he decided to mess with Abigail.
Wow, I really like your analysis! The mention of time fascinates me, John most certainly wishes he had never had the affair with Abigail in the first place, but it has happened and all John can do is to wait for Elizabeth to forgive him.
DeleteI agree with your analysis that John feels guilty for committing adultery and he wants to make it up to her. However, Elizabeth still feels tension that he broke their trust in their relationship and she can’t really find a way in her heart to forgive him. I also really liked how you explained the quotes and connected it. You did a great job!
DeleteThe song you chose definitely reflects John's emotions and thoughts. In the book, John clearly wants to move on from what happened between him and Abigail but he continues to live in guilt. I agree with how you said no matter what John does, he still doesn't think Elizabeth forgave him because he is always reminded of his mistake. John has also explained this to Abigail in Act I. He tells her they never touched and tries to tell it never happened.

" The Boy is Mine" by Brandy
Analysis: In the opening act Abigail and the other girls go to the forest with Tituba in her attempt to try and kill Elizabeth so that she can be with John Proctor. Later, she tries to convince him that he still loves her and that he's the first person she's ever loved in that kind of way. Brandy says " but you're blind if you can't see that his love is holding me". This shows how she truly feels about Proctor and that she's willing to do anything just to have his love, even if it means that she has to kill others in the process. This also shows her selfishness and her overall neediness. She is incapable of considering others emotions and seeing how her actions would affect others as long as it benefits her.
Abigail Williams
ReplyDeleteSong: Vengeance is Mine by Alice Cooper
Lyrics: Vengeance is mine
Vengeance is mine, mine, mine
To forgive is divine
But vengeance is mine, mine, mine
Analysis:
Abigail's vengeful feelings spur her into manipulating the girls, lying to the court, and attempting to ruin the relationship of John and Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail's need for revenge causes her to use manipulation to intimidate the girls into following her plan of deceit. Abigail bullies the other girls into not spoiling her plan for revenge by verbally and physically attacking them. "Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you" (20). Abigail knows all the girls fear her and she uses this to her advantage. Abigail's paralysis allows the whole outcome of the witch trials to favor her.
Abigail's selfishness also causes her to frequently lie in court. Madly in love with John Proctor, Abigail believes that if Elizabeth were not in the way, he would belong to her. When the accusations begin, Abigail quickly claims to have seen Elizabeth Proctor with the devil. Abigail even goes out of her way to get Mary to plant the poppet in Elizabeth's possession. She then stabs herself with a needle into her stomach and blames Elizabeth of wanting to kill her. She denies that the poppet belongs to Mary Warren and insists that Elizabeth is playing with witchcraft. Abigail will stop at nothing to get what she wants.
I don't think Abigail was in Act 2, you also had to explain a stanza or sentence from the song.
DeleteFirstly I'd just like to say, I LOVE ALICE COOPER! Vengeance is a great song and it definitely goes perfect with this situation. Abigail is a very vengeful character full of greed and selfishness. The tone of the song and the exact essence that you point out go perfectly. I totally agree!

Ah, midnight is there.
Ah, I'm not sleeping.
And less I sleep and more I'm thinking,
and more I'm thinking and less I forget.
Analysis:
Act II gives us an insight of Elizabeth's character. As a Christian woman, her heart is tied to God, her principles are shaped by the bible and He is the only judge. However, her tolerance and "forgiving" attitude are the principles that hurt her, that remind her the lack of atention and affection she provided to her husaband. Jonh's illicit romance haunt Elizabeth, make her angry, make her doubtful and deeply dreading her husband's weak moral compass. One of the most relevant lines "And I, birwiched by darkness" reflects on the sad life Elizaberh has, the unfair world she is surrounded. Nor only her husband cheated on her while she was bearing a child; because of jealousy and vengance, she is prosecuted "by darkness" by vengance and the evil that "walks Salem".
I agree with you Francis because Elizabeth's character has a moral connection/ duty to god. When she was betrayed by John the first time she tries to move on , and forgive her husband for his infidelity. He makes it even harder on her the second time around because due to his actions, his wife might just die. Elizabeth's life is at stake but she still gracefully leaves her house as she gets arrested because he knows that in the name of the lord, she a good christian woman
DeleteI agree with how you said that Elizabeth having tolerance on forgiving John hurt her, internally. She had to deal with the fact that John cheated on her with Abigail. Even though Elizabeth has grudges on trying to give John deep inside she still has feelings for him. Aside from this Elizabeth is very religious so that can be a reason for why it can be hard to forgive. He broke one of the commandments. Elizabeth internal conflicts affects her actions.

Song Lyrics:
I don't wanna waste my time if I can't be by your side
You really shouldn't think about God if she can't see where you hide
We don't gotta talk about nothing nice if you wanna come down
But she don't gotta know 'bout nothing
But she don't gotta know...
And if the stars collide, will she relieve my soul?
And when we feel alive I know she'll let me go
When you read my lips, I know you feel all cold
But I promise you my heart is made of gold
In the beginning of Act 2 John and Elizabeth argue about him cheating on her with Abigail. At this time John feels nothing but anger to himself and his wife. He looks at his wife while they argue and he sees Elizabeth's attitude towards and infers that she still doesn't forgive him, Joji says "When you read my lips, I know you feel all cold". This reflects on the situation he is in, how he believes that Elizabeth doesn't trust him. Another line that reflects his thought is "But I promise you my heart is made of gold" showing that he'll do anything to make it right especially at the end of Act 2 in which he'll go to court to save his wife and testify against Abigail and admit his cheating to save his wife from certain death. During the end all he has are good intentions and this is the right step to take in order to get forgiveness from his wife.

ReplyDelete“You were my sun, you were my earth
But you didn’t know all the other ways I loved you, no

Analysis:
Elizabeth found out that John Proctor had an affair with Abigail. Elizabeth might feel betrayed by John after finding out this information. Elizabeth also might be scared of Abigail her using the poppet in Act II. John Proctor feels sorry for having an affair with Abigail. The quote from the text illustrates that Elizabeth treasured John Proctor. Elizabeth treated John Proctor nicely and might be astonished by what happened.
Elizabeth has stayed by John and had tried to maintain her family. She continually was skeptical about John and why was he hasn't told on abigail. She urges him to do so for not only to the innocent people but to assure he Loves her more than Abigail. If he snitches on her John will will have to expose the adulurty being committed and Elizabeth is staying with him after the town finds out he has committed a sin.
DeleteI disagree with the part where you said Elizabeth might be scared of Abigail her using the poppet in Act II. I disagree with it because I don’t think Elizabeth will be Scared of Abigail. I think she will hold a grudge against Abigail because Abigail had a fling with John which is her husband. And Elizabeth doesn’t really know what to do because she can’t leave John because she has kids and will be known as a widow in the village and no one will ever want to marry her and she doesn’t want the whole town to know what happened because then everyone is going to look down on them.

Analysis:
When we start reading Act III, John would be heading straight to where Abigail and the girls are, and expose the reasons to their actions. John knows the girls are just fooling around, Abigail told him. At first, John was still hesitating on whether or not to lose his reputation or dignity to clear out the false accusations towards innocent people. But Elizabeth gets arrested. The part “ I can see it right away shows that John knows that girls are still fooling around. “ I came up, you changed up” shoes that how her life changed now.
I disagree with you Mirza, when drake says “ I came up, you changed up” I feel as if that these thoughts would be more of Elizebth. John and Elizabeth have been married for a long time and they have two children together. She misses the John she fell in love with, and the feeling and emotion he once gave to her. Ever since he committed adultery and Elizabeth found out, John has been trying to express his emotions and provide Elizabeth with that same feeling she once had. When Drake says “Vibe switch like night and day, I can see it right away”. This best characterizes Elizabth always questioning him where he had been for the day and being skeptical about Abigail. She clearly sees the switch of attitude and especially actions are swayed.
DeleteI agree on what you said Sally, John rather have his reputation tarnished then having his wife get hanged and arrested for Abigail’s selfishness. This proves that John truly does love Elizabeth. Yes, Abigail and John had chemistry with each other, but that was the past, John made a mistake and he’s trying to make up for it. So now John is going to make everything right by telling the truth.
ReplyDeleteThe lyrics of your song accurately shows what is going on in Proctor's head. He beats himself up over time because of his own blame. I agree with how he might feel like a murderer because of what he's done and how that will affect others. The lyrics at the beginning also show how Elizabeth knowing his sins makes him feel, he feels sad and guilty for making her feel that way. Proctor doesn't want to be the one to hurt Elizabeth.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Lamont because the lyrics don't really interpret John proctor very well. "Tryna play it safe vibe switch like night and day" isn't really like John because he wasn't trying to play it safe if he knew having adulatery with Abigail was against his morals yet he still done it. Also, if he was trying to play it safe he wouldn't have told Elizabeth that he had cheated on her but her did.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mirza and with her song to an extend that John Proctor fake lover her only to get what he wanted and Abigail being changed but I also agree with Lamont because John Proctor did not go to Abigail, she was just right when John Proctor need someone and that is how it happen maybe with wrong person but it still happen and that doesn't really proof that John loved Mrs. Putman rather the opposite but after the book goes on we see he actually loves her but can change what has been done but he is fighting for her in court

Nature ain't a fruit machine
She's gotta keep her credits clean
Good things come to those who wait
But I ain't in a patient phase.
…
This song by Marina and the Diamonds best describes Abigail Williams.
In Act One, we learn that Abigail along with many other of the puritan girls were caught dancing like heathen in the forest. Reverend Parris, caught them in the middle of their sinful act. We know that Abigail was accused by her own cousin Betty of drinking a charm to kill Goody Proctor. We know about John Proctors affair with Abigail.
In the song FROOT by Marina and the Diamonds, the stanza says: “She's gotta keep her credits clean, Good things come to those who wait But I ain't in a patient phase” (MatD). This stanza portrays Abigail just the way she is because she wants to keep her name clean and she does not want to have any blush on her name even though she isn’t the best and most pure person. She also believes that if she waits John will eventually come to her. However, she has waited too long for him and that’s why she drinks a charm to kill Goody Proctor. She does an evil thing by trying to take the life of Elizabeth just to be with her husband. She is fully aware of her sins but she knows she won’t face the consequences if she’s an official of the court.
Abigail is honestly one of the most heartless characters in the novel. However she is very smart. It's reasonable that to save herself from punishment, she had to lie. Women didn't have much reputation or recognition at the time, but they did have to take care of their purity (being virgins). When it says "She's gotta keep her credits clean", I think it's a great way of putting her mentality, morals and image as pure. She is a puritan and she seems innocent to the eyes of everyone. But evil lies outside. There's no doubt that Abigail is a impatient character, the fact that Abigail took opportunity to create her own story and become the new saint of the town, reflects on her desire of John Proctor that she has held within herself for long. Her internal conflict is only the fight that happen within herself. She started the hunt in order to kill Elizabeth and have John, but now, will she force guilt onto Elizabeth, or continue this series of murders that not only make her look pure but she is also now enjoying.

ReplyDeleteI can feel your heart when we're apart
Girl I'm on my way, trust every word I say
I can't wait to see your face
And when I said goodbye, I saw the tears in your eyes as you started to cry
I took your hand, and promised I'll be right back
Girl I'm coming right back to see you smile
This song perfectly reflects John Proctor’s mindset in Act III. The song talks about how he feels her heart when they are apart. Elizabeth is in jail while Proctor and other husbands fighting to get their wives, are presenting their evidence to the judge Danforth. Then it's says that he is on his way and to trust every word that he says which represents Proctor fighting for Elizabeth to get her home. He is trying to make everything right again because he feels guilty that she is in jail due to the reason that he did not confess to the judge earlier that Abigail told him that it is all lie.
I agree with you Lamont as your song choice and analysis coincide with each other almost perfectly. John Proctor constantly beats himself up and feels like doing all of these strenuous things to please Elizabeth would help him and his wife. His wife irresponsiveness to his attempts makes him feel even worse as shown in the lyrics. Proctor only wants to be there for Elizabeth when she needs him.
ReplyDeleteSong: Take Me To Church
ReplyDeleteBy: Hozier
My lover's got humor
She's the giggle at a funeral
Knows everybody's disapproval
I should've worshiped her sooner
If the Heavens ever did speak
She is the last true mouthpiece
Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick", you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me 'worship in the bedroom'
The only heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
Amen, Amen, Amen
Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life
Analysis: The emotions that are conveyed in this song come from the enduring issue of sexuality. In the music video two men are harassed for being together and one of them dies because of it. There faith in god is Diminished as the ones they love are taken away from them because of the way they are. In comparison to the situation in the Crucible, John saving his wife by telling the truth just like the couple, might be the death of him. Both being non acceptant of different ideas causes the unnecessary death of people who shouldn’t have had to die. In the Crucible the lies people kept to them selves is what kills them them, in contrast the lies they tell saved them. In the song take me to church there faith in god is what they believe will save them, but they feel betrayed when there world comes crashing down on them. In the crucible there belief in god is questioned when there belief of confessing is what gets them in trouble because no one is willing to hear the truth. Johns emotions are what get the best of him and cause him to tell the truth.
